Big Sandz on Four Tet, Waterparks, Spaceships and living a lie!

 big sandz
Q:Who are you?
My name is AJ Navilio, aka Big Sandz, lover of vibration and warrior of love.
Q: The Beginnings – When did you start making electronic music?
I started dabbling with electronic music production in 06′ but started taking my production seriously about a year ago when i created Big Sandz.
Q: What or who inspired you?
My favorite electronic producer of all time is Four Tet. His records changed my life and my understanding of music as a whole. I guess my biggest inspiration is this burning desire inside to spread love and truth to as many people as i can in this life, i started playing music at a young age so it just seemed to make sense that that would be my outlet to spread that message.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A moderation between Life and Death or like the combination of light and the darkness within existence. My goal is to combine the evil and the good in this world into music to explain how i see/ experience things.
Q: How was your grasp of the audio engineering & production at this time? How did you learn producing? Is it all self taught, from the internet and tutorials or mentors and teachers?
When i first started i knew nothing, i think i just layed things out like a musician would, in loops and stuff with barely any eq or processing. I learned to produce just by playing with ableton and listening to all of the different effects by trying them out. I have watched a few tutorials and learned a trick or two from other producers but i would say the majority of my learning experience has been from countless hours trying shit out and listening to the result.
Q: Tell us about your setup. Are you using mostly software or hardware these days?
When i produce i use Ableton Live, various vst’s, the Maschine, and an axiom 61 keyboard. I rely more on software then i do on hardware most of the time.
Q: What are your five favorite instrument and effect plugins?
Love me some nexus, massive, reactor, gotta have ozone and i like warm verb for phased out/ vox chopped effects.
Q: Who are the artists who have influenced you the most right now?
Lately i’ve really been feelin minnesota’s stuff, sound remedy, blackmill, cma, amtrac, henry krinkle, nastnasty, hucci.
Q: What is your typical work schedule like?
Random and chaotic. Sometimes i wake up and work on music for hours other times i cant do anything at all no matter how hard i try. And then theres the occasional i cant sleep so get out of bed and produce until noon the next day.
Q: How do you promote your music? Are there any music promotion services you can recommend?
I ask people to spread/share my music if they feel it. I haven’t used any music promotion services except for posting my new tracks to soundcloud and then in soundcloud groups that match the vibe of that song.
Q: How do you distribute your music? Are there any digital distribution services that worked for you which you can recommend to our readers?
Through, all of my music is free and will most likely stay that way.
Q: What social media or websites do you use for music promotion
Soundcloud and Facebook and Twitter.
Q: Let´s talk about djing and live gigs. Do you remember your first gigs? How were your first experiences with finding and playing gigs.
My first gig was actually awesome, there was only about 50-60 people there but they were feelin it and i was too, it was fun. I have always pretty much had a good time playing out, its always hit or miss but when u like the music your playing you get paid to play your favorite jams for an hour.. whats not to like.
Q: Was it complicated finding a booking agency or clubs to play at and how were the first gigs received? What´s it like on tour for you?
My family at Ragefacerecords hooked me up with pretty much all of my gigs.
Q: If you could only take one piece of gear on the road with you besides your laptop, what would it be?
Pioneer DDJ SX
Q: What is your favorite animal?
Koala bear
Q: What would your personal dream life look like?
My dream life, hmm… 100 acre property with 20 mansions on it one for each of my homies with a big ass lake in the middle with a waterpark, jet skis with those new things that let you fly out of water, with a helicopter and plane runway next to it to skydive from. Then in the lake i would find a way to make it crystal clear water and put in a whole big ass atlantis like structure with a whole ecosystem of fish and mammals n shit so i could scuba dive with my mates and say whats up to the deepness. PA speakers would be equipped everywhere on the property and every one would be wirelessly linked to whoever’s smart device is walking by them at the time, for example when were scuba diving down in atlantis, pwning noobs, Minnesota would be slumping in our headsets and above when we resurfaced. I would have trillions of dollars so i could split it with my friends and give it to the parts of the world that need it and build science labs and find a cure for all these diseases n shit. Then before i was going to die i would buy a spaceship and some acid and take off into the sun. Most epic cremation ever. Fryin balls literally. But seriously… my dream life is to be able to find a new truth/meaning in this universe that no one else has ever seen/understood and to share that with the whole world through my music and shows.
Q: And what would be your worst nightmare scenario in life?
Forgetting what i know to be true and living a lie, ending up alone and miserable and disconnection from being alive.
In a parallel universe Q: If you weren’t a musician, what would you be and why?
An Astrophysicist because that’s shit is so interesting to me and those are some of the coolest dudes on this planet.
The Future Q: When we interview you in one year, where do you see yourself?
Hopefully doing the same thing 10 levels above where I´m at with more love and more mastery of this craft.
Thank you for you time and this great interview! – Check out:
