Aegis Recordings

Check out and share our Aegis Recordings Interview. This interview is part of our new Labels in the Spotlight Series. In this interview series we feature exciting labels from all over the world. As always: Share & Support!

Please tell us a bit about yourself and your label. Where are you based, what genres & styles do you cover… And when/how how did it all start?

Aegis Recordings is a US based electronic music label that started in fall 2017. We mainly release Future Bass and similar genres, but we occasionally branch out into Downtempo, House, and more. We started as a promotional network but as we started to get off the ground we transitioned naturally into a label all our own, inspired in part perhaps by such labels as Seeking Blue and Monstercat.

What are some releases our audience simply must check out? (Either new stuff or evergreen classics)

In January we released an EP from FeS with wonderful features such as Stephen Geisler and Ashley Apollodor, and our crowd favorite release is Ascitend – Tranquil.

Are you looking for new artists to sign or collaboration partners? (Be it media partners, remix competitions or otherwise?)

We're always looking for talent and always looking for help with promotion, booking, and advertising.

Are you a superfan of anyone? How did you become a superfan? Do you remember how you become a fan and what turned you into super fan? Have you ever thought about why you´re such a fan?

Personally, yes, of Daydreamer and Speaker Of The House. Daydreamer because his Senses EP really resonated with my tastes and had a part in shaping my style as a musician. Speaker Of The House because it was a release of his on Electrostep Network that put the idea of making electronic music into my head back in 2012. Without these 2 artists influencing me, I wouldn't be where I am today.

What was the biggest mistake you made when you started making music and what would be the number one tip you could give to a newcomer musician?

Ah, I made so many mistakes from the start all the way to recently, and I'll probably look back in 5 months and find mistakes I've made today or tomorrow. Regrets are abundant, we all have them and we'll all have more before all is done. My biggest career regret was probably the way I used to act a year ago and further back. I was spammy, selfish, self promoted constantly, went as far as aggressively advertising to 23,000 strangers in private messages on a Discord server once. Nothing kills your reputation faster than spamming soundcloud links to people you don't know, and it's taken over a year to fix my image after that.

How do you get gigs? Can you share any tips?

Getting gigs for our artists has been difficult so far, us being a startup and all, but it's still been possible. We try to get close to whoever is hosting the service we're after and work on building a, for lack of better words, less stiff relationship. Once they're comfortable with us as people and have a feel for us as a company, we ask for small favors, nothing big. We establish a give and take and gradually pick up the pace until we can ask for what we wanted from the start. Doing things this way is certainly tedious, but it brings the added benefit of connections within the industry.

Do you have good promotion tips for other musicians?

DO NOT SPAM. I can't stress that enough. Spamming links does little to no good and will not make you successful. The best thing you can do is build a marketing network or find a manager to do it for you. If you can't afford management and you don't want to take the time to learn about music marketing, the best thing for you to do is just keep a regular release schedule and be as friendly as possible toward your audience, then encourage them WHEN APPROPRIATE to share your music with a friend of theirs.

Do you have insights on how to grow your audience on soundcloud that you want to share with our audience?

My philosophy on growing an audience is essentially bulk over time. If we can get 20,000 people to listen to a song in a day or 700 in 2 hours, we're going to take the long road. Never take shortcuts when it comes to marketing. Find the method that has the most effect and stick with it until you're an expert, whether that be repost trading, social media, radio play, or even opening for acts at your local club. If it works, it doesn't matter how unglamorous it may be or how much work it takes, it's what works for you so follow it.

What has been your biggest challenge right now? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?

How do you personally discover new music?

We tend to find most of our artists through word of mouth or connections, but occasionally we'll stumble across a producer on Soundcloud we really like and we'll approach them through private messages or if possible Discord.

Once you discovered new music, do you tell others about the new music/artist you discovered? If yes, how exactly?

“Yes but not until we've established a working relationship, and then we usually wait until near their first release so the news is more impactful.

What is your number one tip to improve your music production or songwriting skills?

Focus on mixing. An expertly written song with a bad mix sounds horrible, while a lazily written song with an expert mix can and just might find success.

What is your best tip for those who struggle with finishing their tracks?

If you're nearly done with the track, just come back to it in a day or two if you get stuck. Sometimes I'll table a project for months, forget about it, and find it again when I've developed my artistry more and all of a sudden I'm just full of ideas for it that I never would have had before. If you're nowhere near done, ask another producer you're friends with to work on it with you. Better to put someone else's name on it with you than never see release.

We meet again in one year. What has changed?

Hopefully Aegis will be a respectable label with a solid foundation and tens of thousands of fans. We're growing fast, we already have a dedicated following of a couple thousand electronic music enthusiasts, so for the next year I have some very ambitious goals I'll be working on with the rest of Aegis' wonderful staff.
