AKAMA

Read the AKAMA Interview below and share it on social media.

Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

My name is Justin Akama and I am the electronic music artist AKAMA. I began making music in 2017 as a hobby while I was finishing up my college degree from the University of Washington in the Seattle area. I heard a song from Odesza called It's Only and I was like "oh god I gotta make stuff like that" and that was it. Growing up in Honolulu Hawaii there really wasn't an edm scene or an indie scene which kinda killed it for me. My music making started as just something I would do in my room for hours on end cause I loved it. I think it was February when I released my first song to major music markets and from then on it's just grown. I learned to DJ on the fly and honestly I'm still learning. In October I received my first residency at STAGE nightclub in Seattle which is a pretty sick spot, you should check it out. In the past 6 months which was when I started playing in front of people, I've gotten to open for Zeds Dead, GG Magree, Ganja White Night, and Sharps which has been crazy. I think my goal is just to always progress and always push the limits of what music and electronic music especially can make a person feel. Check out my music and yeah just thanks for listening. https://soundcloud.com/user-279510180

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

My influences are kinda strange for an EDM guy. Odesza is probably my biggest inspiration just cause they're so different in a world of over used samples. Porter Robinson was huge for me as was Flume. Alison Wonderland was where I discovered singer/songwriter bass. But then it really comes from artists like The Arctic Monkeys, The Fray, Angus and Julia Stone, The Lumineers, Alt-J, Coconut Records, The Neighborhood, and Passion Pit. Indie bands kinda showed me what it is I love about music and that's the emotion it can convey. Don't get me wrong, party music is phenomenal but I love the feels.

What´s new right now?

Yeah I've been releasing a slew of remixes to end the year but in 2018 I plan to release my first official EP. Of course I'm gonna keep the remixes coming and what not but I'm really really excited for the EP. The talent level of some of the vocalists and other artists I'm working with this on is phenomenal. That's definitely gonna be something to look out for. Overall I'm excited to see where this all goes now that I have a direction and idea of what I want out of my music and artwork. 2018 is gonna be a big year so keep an eye out for me.
