Andie Roy

Read the Andie Roy Interview below and share it on social media.

Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

My name is Chris, but I got under the production alias of Andie Roy. I produce a plethora of styles, starting from Tropical/deep house to more recently producing future/bass/G-House. I've always loved a metered beat, and as I've continued my production career, I've worked on taking on more complex sounds, and eventually want to work on even crazier styles outside of house.

I first went live with my Jack Johnson Gone (Going) remix in 2014 – this hit the Hypem top 10 charts instantly, which gave me a sudden urge to push more music. A few other songs that I'd like to highlight are my Sean Kingston "Beautiful Girls" Remix with Suntimechild (which has garnished a few million views across numerous platforms) and my "ABC" remix that I completed with N2N, which was signed and distributed by Universal Music Group.

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

I began producing with intent to make progressive house exactly like Deadmau5's Random Album Title. I still have my Massive preset of those chords saved to this day, but after messing around a bit, I was uncomfortable releasing too much of my early music. Soon enough, I started producing tropical/deep house under Andie Roy, which was a great style to get a better understanding around how to produce, layer, mix, and master a track. Those track influences ranged from Kygo, Sam Feldt, Autograf, and so many others. Fast forward to where I am today, and I've put a heavier emphasis on bass and future house. I've always loved a great beat that can invigorate the dance floor. My favorite type of remix is one where you recognize the lyrics but your jaw drops when you hear the twist on it – there is nothing like that feeling when you first here a track that you need to get your hands on. I've been listening to a lot of Brazilian Bass recently (mainly Vintage Culture and similar artists).

What´s new right now?

Before the New Year, I've released an hour mix for the Mugatunes Soundcloud channel for both 2015 and 2016. We're going even bigger with a two hour mix for 2017, so keep an eye out for that.

I'm also producing a ton of new house tracks, some unofficial, some original, but 2018 should be a fun year for releases.

Are you a superfan of anyone? How did you become a superfan? Do you remember how you become a fan and what turned you into super fan? Have you ever thought about why you´re such a fan?

Deadmau5. The man is a production genius hands down. And I love how he strives to make tracks that are out of the ordinary. Every artist should work to push the bounds, and I feel he does it in every album/track that he releases.

What was the biggest mistake you made when you started making music and what would be the number one tip you could give to a newcomer musician?

Support matters so much. From a producer that's just getting his understanding around production, to an expert producer, to managers in the space, to even those in different genres, you should always share, engage, and ask for advice. A successful producer typically has a great support system that helps push and promote his track, both publicly and privately. That is key.

How do you personally discover new music?

I subscribe to numerous Spotify playlists (depending on my mood of music) and hit shuffle. You'll always come across new amazing tracks, which becomes a rolling effect.

What is your number one tip to improve your music production or songwriting skills?

Be a ninja at EQing. It is so critical that you manipulate your sounds to sit nicely on top of each other (without ripping too much of certain levels out from each other). I've found that being a better EQer has helped my tracks a ton.

What is your best tip for those who struggle with finishing their tracks?

Close your laptop and go for a run, check instagram, play a game, go out for a bite to eat, literally do anything to reset. It is important to take a break and listen to your product at a different time. Even if your track is completed, you'll often times hear it and want to immediately edit or rearrange sounds. If you get writers block, don't worry, it happens to us all – just breathe and try something new. If you want something tangible, try messing with the beat. If you change the rhythm up, the melodies and chords might find themselves quicker in your DAW than you think ?
