Read the Andrew ‘Natus’ Sherwin Interview below and share it on social media.
Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?
I'm Andrew Sherwin (Natus), a violinist and pianist from the UK, however in recent years I've been composing and producing my own tunes as well. I went to a music focused boarding school in Manchester called Chetham's School of Music to improve at violin, but whilst there I was also introduced to jazz, electronica and loads of other styles which got me hooked on music as a broader spectrum, rather than only classical music. I'm now at the Royal College of Music in London, continuing my studies in all areas of music I can get my hands on!
How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?
My influences range from a really wide scope of art. My brother is an artist, so I was always interested other areas of creativity. Impressionist and romanticist artwork like Renoir and Constable always inspired me to create a lush, sweeping but delicate sound in everything I made, even Drum and Bass! Musically, I was first inspired by neo-classical, which still does and will always captivate me. English pastoral composers like Herbert Howells, Gerald Finzi and Vaughan-Williams have always had a solid place as one of my main influences. Though, more recently I've also been exploring lots of interesting contemporary music by the likes of artists such as Alon Mor, Herbie Hancock, Cory Henry and Amon Tobin. There's such a wealth of originality and innovation in these artists music, I always have to listen back several times! One thing I've been getting very inspired by recently has been microtonal music, such as Ben Johnston and Giaccinto Scelsi. It has so much potential for creating really rich sounding textures, ones like I see in the artwork I mentioned earlier.
What´s new right now?
I'm currently working with a composer called Theo May on an experimental jazz/folk project, and yes that's genuinely the best description I could give on it without showing you! Our next gig is with Keith Tippett at Café OTO in Dalston, see here for more details: https://www.cafeoto.co.uk/events/keith-tippett-presents-the-rare-music-club/
I'll also be releasing a whole load of new music on projects I cannot yet disclose, and on my soundcloud, which you can find below. If you like acoustic and orchestral music, you should get tuned in. Lots is coming soon!
