Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

I’m a genre-leaping songwriter, a blogger and performer.

My background is both in literature and music, and so it’s not surprising that my songs are frequently haunted by characters from plays or novels. Hank Williams once said, “A song ain’t nothin’ in the world but a story just wrote with music to it.” I couldn’t agree more.
I consider my songs musical short stories, as my albums, “Another Night at the Circus”, and my most recent one, “The Devil’s Storybook” will happily testify.

I live and perform in the UK, which is my adopted country, although I do occasionally also play in Germany, which is where I’m hailing from.

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

When I first decided I wanted to be a musician I didn’t quite know how to go about it. All I knew was that I had to listen to a lot of music. I wasn’t even aware of there being genres – to my knowledge there existed only 3 categories: good music, dull music and utterly awful music.

My earliest and possibly most profound influence is the German singer/songwriter Reinhard Mey, but it was originally the Beatles’ fault that I picked up the guitar and decided I wanted to be a musician.

Soon I moved on to more lyric-driven artists, like Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits and Nick Cave. At around the time I seriously started writing songs, a fellow songwriter introduced me to Regina Spektor.
I don’t know if my influences have changed as such, you could maybe say they have expanded.

I still don’t limit myself to genres, which makes trying to spot my influences quite interesting for fans!

What´s new right now?

In the very near future there’s going to be a UK tour of the show I’ve recently developed – “The Devil’s Storybook Experience.”

The show is difficult to describe, as I’m not aware of anything vaguely similar, but one could say it’s halfway between cabaret and a play, all performed in the character of the Devil. It’s got music, it’s got comic moments, it’s got drama and surprises. It features poems by the award winning poet John Agard, who very kindly permitted me to use them to unravel a sympathetic portrait of one of the most fascinating characters in mythology.
Needless to say, since the Devil’s suitcase doesn’t only hold darkness, but also fun and revolution, the reception of it has been extremely enthusiastic so far.
“You fricking rocked our hearts. You are a beautiful blend of the devil, Shakespeare, and faeries combined,” someone wrote in my guestbook. And this is what a reviewer had to say:
“…very thought provoking and gave a very different account of how the Devil can be seen… Annika Brown had hit on something special … It is going to get hotter in more ways than one! ****”
