Atealem

Please introduce yourself real quick…

I am a rapper from Baltimore, Maryland, who lives in Houston, Texas. I make music for everyone but my sound leans towards the people who are self-conflicted. I try to be a beacon for those and help people through my craft because, I believe that music is one of the greatest tools known to man.

What do you do?

I only posted my first song called, 'The Mountain', just last December and plan to put out my next project, 'The Long Overdue Mixtape'. The reason for the title for this project is because I have planned for years to put out music but struggled with conducting the perfect style for my music. So, I figured the name fit like a glove when I decided it. Once that project drops this year, I plan on doing events in Houston to develop a strong fan-base and promote good music. I would not call myself a "woke" or "conscious" rapper because I believe that I am just a guy that raps with a message. I have been rapping since I was 10 years old and it has been my first love ever since. My motivation comes from the opposition I faced as a young aspiring artist and do not want to be heard for the money but, the feeling of getting on stage and spitting out your life's work to the people that support and love you, and the people that don't.

What´s new right now?

My first project, The Long Overdue Mixtape will be here this year, be on the lookout. In the meantime, bend your ear to my newest song called The Mountain on Soundcloud. https://soundcloud.com/atealem/the-mountain

How do you personally discover new music?

Usually on Twitter I ask people to send me playlists so I can later on give my feedback. I primarily use Apple Music as my source of streaming music but I am open to others as well. I also ask people to follow me on Apple Music (@atealem) so I can follow back and listen to whatever they are listening to.

What is your number one tip to improve your music production or songwriting skills?

Apart from practicing, listening to different types of music can improve production and songwriting skills. As a rapper it seems a little redundant to only listen to rap music if you want to develop your flow. Listening to other genres can increase your creativity and you can use that to enforce different types of sound in your music.

What is your best tip for those who struggle with finishing their tracks?

Get comfortable with how you sound on the mic because it will never go away. For a while I did not like the way I sounded on the mic but I got over that with time. Always get a few opinions on your music before you officially put it out because constructive criticism can go a long way.
