Aubrey Whitfield

Check out and share our Aubrey Whitfield Interview. This interview is part of our new Producer & Engineer Q&A Series. In this interview series we feature exciting producers, mixing and mastering engineers from all walks of life. As always: Share & Support!

Please introduce yourself real quick. Tell our audience about your background and how you go into doing what you´re doing right now.

Hello! I am a music producer, songwriter and vocalist based in London. I am considered to be one of the most successful female music producers in the UK. I originally started out as an artist but always produced my own songs. Then a couple of years ago I decided I wasn't enjoying performing on my own anymore so I decided to try my hand at music producing. Then things took off massively! There is a huge gap in the industry for female producers so I found myself in demand from the start. I also in a pop-rock duo with Argentinian superstar, Gaston Dalmau. We're called the Utopia and our debut single, Crash and Burn charted in three countries and was No.2 on the US pop chart in October 2017. So I'm a busy girl!

Please tell our audience what projects have you been working on in the last years?

I call myself a 'commercial pop' producer, meaning that I produce music that is at Top 40 chart level in the UK and Europe. This isn't necessarily pure pop; it can include rock, dance, RnB and even jazz. But I always produce popular music. The only genres I don't really produce are Hip-Hop and metal! In 2017 I produced around 140 songs for artists and I gained 96 new clients. And the numbers continue to grow!

What are you currently working on? Do you accept clients and and what kind of projects/work fits your profile?

I work with major record labels, independent record labels and also talented 'unsigned' artists. At the moment I am working with some incredible artists, including a number of X-Factor and Britain's Got Talent finalists, Fabian Raad-McAndrew who is Germany's next big male solo artist, London King a stunning electro pop artist and Mairead Furlong who is an award winning singer-songwriter currently being championed by BBC Introducing. I am always interested in working with fresh and exciting new artists. So if there is a talented artist looking for chart standard productions and some support and mentoring, then they can send me some of their demos to listen to and we can take it from there.

What is your number one tip to improve your music production or songwriting skills?

Being a competent producer comes with time, patience, skill and experience. The best starting point is to listen to songs in the charts at the moment and do a critical analysis of that song. What do you hear? What do the drums sound like? What effects are on the vocals? Are the instruments panned left-right and what is playing? What changes happen throughout the track. Every pop song follows a formula and a structure. If you learn how songs are structured and common techniques that producers use, then this will help you to start improving your own productions. Also, keep productions simple and make sure any production brings the vocals to life.

What is your best tip for those who struggle with finishing their tracks?

A lot of producers struggle with this but I would say don't be so hard on yourself. If you write or produce a great song then you will finish it for sure because you'll have that buzz and you will want to finish it. If you are struggling to finish a song or production then it probably means it's not that good. If it doesn't get your heart thumping then shelve it and just move onto the next track.
