BENY

Read the BENY Interview below and share it on social media.

Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

My name is Beny and I am a 21 year old recording artist from Toronto, Canada. I write and sing original songs mainly in the Pop genre.

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

I have been a huge music lover for as long as I can remember. I first started out playing guitar and learning rock/metal songs by bands like ‘Slipknot’ and ‘Asking Alexandria’. I actually used to play lead guitar in a metal band back in highschool and would regularly play shows in Toronto. After a few years of exploring different genres my taste evolved into loving Pop music. I discovered artists like Ed Sheeran, Charlie Puth, and other Canadian powerhouse artists like The Weeknd and Shawn Mendes. That’s when I decided to work on a solo career. I was so incredibly influenced by these amazing artists that I wanted to also take the mantle of a professional singer aswell! And now, I am a full time singer/producer writing Pop music.

What´s new right now?

Yes! I actually just released a brand new single called ‘Alive’ towards the end of October. I am now back in the studio everyday working on my next track. I plan on releasing about 4-5 new songs going into 2018. These new songs are incredibly personal to me which is why I want them to be perfect! But I really think people are going to respond to them positively.

Are you a superfan of anyone? How did you become a superfan? Do you remember how you become a fan and what turned you into super fan? Have you ever thought about why you´re such a fan?

I am an absolute superfan of Ed Sheeran. I actually discovered his music from listening to his hits on the radio. And now his music is one of the biggest influences I have to create and push myself to make great original music.

What was the biggest mistake you made when you started making music and what would be the number one tip you could give to a newcomer musician?

My biggest mistakes were early on in my career where I would release music that was unfinished, rushed or sounded unprofessional. But after some time I realized that all I need to do is perfect my craft. That includes constant vocal training and tons of trial and error with production. But in the end I have to make sure that it sounds perfect. I even get my musician friends to help me out and to tell me what is wrong with a track so when I actually do release it, people enjoy it and hear no mistakes. It should always sound professional.

How do you get gigs? Can you share any tips?

Yes I do actually! Although Im still building up my own audience, I find it helps when you actually participate in the SoundCloud community. Things like listening to new songs, commenting your honest opinion on someone’s work, and even collaborating with up and coming artists. All these things help bring exposure to your own sound.

Do you have good promotion tips for other musicians?

I promote myself by networking with new people online and in person. Build up a good social media presence through platforms like Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube. Remember to always link all your social pages together so people have an easier time finding you.

What has been your biggest challenge right now? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?

My biggest challenge at the moment is getting recognition and gaining an audience for my music. But I believe with enough time and hard work things like that will start falling into place and actually start building a much more solid fanbase.

What is your number one tip to improve your music production or songwriting skills?

Honestly there is no definite formula to producing a professional sound. Every artist/producer has their own methods and techniques. But, what I found that helped me the most is investing in new plugins to improve quality, YouTube tutorials on how to layer certain instruments or layer vocals. Production is all about experimentation. Listen to other people’s music and analyze carefully how certain tracks are recorded because it will give you a better perspective on how to improve your overall sound. Always, always listen to new material because it really does help with production.

What is your best tip for those who struggle with finishing their tracks?

In my opinion, the best way to finish a track is to work on it when you’re truly inspired. There is nothing worse than having an almost finished song and rushing the last part of it. I find that if you really want to wow your audience, you have to finish off with a bang. Something that will stay with the listeners even after the song is done. They best way to achieve that is write/create when you really feel inspired. Don’t ever force it because most of the time it will ruin the music. It’s okay if you dont feel inspired for weeks at a time even! It will be so much worth it to wait and write something incredible when youre really feeling it than when you rush it and pretend it’s good.
