Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

Hello good people of Traxx24. I'm Billey Barry and I'm a DJ/Amateur producer from the beautiful city of Toronto Canada. I've been DJing in and around the city for 7 years now and have had the privilege of playing at some of the best venues in the city. Now the first thing you have to know about Toronto is that it's all about the after-hours here. And the sound that we all dance to here is a very unique blend of techno, tech-house and tribal, or as we all just call it "Toronto".

When someone asks me to classify my sound, I always response that I play House, every style and variation of it. Be it disco, vocal, tech, electro and everything in between, with just a sprinkling of techno every now and then to keep you guessing. In this humble DJ's opinion if you're predicable or playing what everyone else is, you're never going to stand out from the pack, cause if that's what you want to hear then I'm not the DJ for you.

I fell in love with the idea of DJing when I saw the movie Juice when I was a teenager. I work my ass off all summer to buy a DJ rig. I would spend my weekends scathing and watching that movie over and over. Then the magic day came when I when to my first rave and I discovered that I had been using my decks completely wrong. From then on it was beats and as much black crack as I could get my hands on. My love just grew from there and I can honestly say, music is life for me.

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

I've listen to music my whole life. When I was in grade 3 my sister made me a tape of Led Zeppelin and it changed my life. I listen to every genre and style of music I can find. To just my musical influences in a short response let me start with bands and solo artists then move on to DJ's and producers.

The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, The Clash, Sex Pistols, Billy Talent, The White Stripes, Johnny Cash, Rage Against The Machine, Soundgarden, The Headstones, Pink Floyd and many more.

Gene Farris, Max Chapman, Latmun, Green Velvet, John Digweed, Eagles & Butterflies, Steve Lawler, Ferry Cortsen, Raffa FL, Apollo 84, Hot Since 82 and love to the whole Toronto scene with special shout outs to Deko-ze, Jerome Robins, Manzone & Strong, Flipside, Quim and my brothers from another mother Jayforce, Ryan Wiley, Joee Cons and Craig Bassline. To all of which I owe everything to for believing in me and the support and friendship that you have all blessed me with.

What´s new right now?

There is always something in the works. I have my weekly night every Tuesday night here in Toronto at Bassline Music Bar that we had nicknamed Tunesday, going on 5 years strong in March. I've also a rotating resident for The Sound Of events in the city. As of now they have the weekly party "Habitat Thursdays" and the monthly event "Made In Toronto"

Are you a superfan of anyone? How did you become a superfan? Do you remember how you become a fan and what turned you into super fan? Have you ever thought about why you´re such a fan?

If you haven't figured it out already I'm a huge fan of John Digweed. I've seen him at least a dozen times and walk away every time just floored by the journey that he takes me without fail. Add in the fact that Bedrock records has been a powerhouse of multiple genres for over 2 decades. Plus for any of you that have seen the movie Groove, no explanation needed.

What was the biggest mistake you made when you started making music and what would be the number one tip you could give to a newcomer musician?

My day job is as a professional chef and I've worked in kitchens pretty much my entire adult life. Now if you have ever seen shows like Hell's Kitchen and seen the rants that Gordon Ramsey goes on. That's actually what life in the kitchen is like. You spend all day calling people the most horrible names in the world, then you all go out together and drink beer afterwards. Everything that happens in the heat of battle is forgiven the next day. Now when dealing with DJs, they're the most sensitive group of people (really underplaying this) out there. I would just rip into people in a totally joking matter and next thing I knew, everyone is talking about what a jerk I was. The lesson is that you should just keep your mouth shut and let your music do the talking for you. Thanks Joee Cons for teaching me that before it was too late.

How do you get gigs? Can you share any tips?

The best way to get gigs as a DJ in my humble opinion is to come out and support nights and events. Introduce yourself to the promoters, DJs, owners and regulars. Let them know you're interested in playing and being part of what they're building. Don't ever just email a set without meeting anyone, or run around the party begging to play. From running my own events I can tell you that I just disregard things like that.

How do you personally discover new music?

As someone who prides myself on having a different sound, I spend some time everyday looking for music. I am lucky that I get promos from some very cool small labels and a few of the big ones too (more are always welcome) but I get the majority of my music from Traxsource. I use the other sites as well but I find a lot of the real underground stuff on their site. I also listen to podcasts from artists and labels, Transitions with John Digweed is a staple when I am doing my laundry on Mondays.

We meet again in one year. What has changed?

In the next year my plan is to work or production a lot more. If your not producing then you're never going to get your name out to other DJs and artists on the scale you want. I would like to add some bigger gigs to the resume of course. And to just be healthy and happy and still be playing loud music in dark rooms will be more than enough.
