Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?
My name is Thiago Rodrigues aka Black boy. I am a composer, rapper and producer of hip hop and funk carioca a genre from Brazil. I live in the city of Uberaba Minas Gerais state and currently work independently without a Label. Worked is still work with several artists from Brazil and I am currently working on my EP and seeking new contacts in other countries.
How would you describe your style and genre?
I describe my style as a cake recipe. All people know how to make a cake, but few add anything else in the recipe to make it to your face. I like to risk mixing rhythms and genres in the same beat. Because in Brazil there are several cultures united in our country
Who are your biggest idols ever? Dead or alive, musician or non-musician.
There are several artists that i like.
From Brazil dead is Tim Maia And alive Racionais Mc's is like N.W.A from Brazil.
And from the states i like rapper Future And Cardiak hip Hop producer.
What was the biggest mistake you made when you started making music and what would be the number one tip you could give to a newcomer musician?
One of the mistakes I made at the beginning was to invest in the purchase of programs and plugins, just by hearing people said it was good, not by actually having a test. The tip is: many vst and vsti can be really great. But never get something without having demo testar.
Cause what may be cool to you may not be nice to me.
Learn how to use the plugins of your DAW first before you purchase plugins from other companies. I'm sure this tip will save you money to invest in what really matters to you.
How do you get gigs? Can you share any tips?
In Brazil things are not easy and rap / hip hop is in the process of becoming popular in the country. But a good publicity and having the maximum of contacts within the branch helps a lot in closing shows. Offer something they want and they will offer you something you want.
What has been your biggest challenge right now? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?
At the moment I'm getting enough offers from Mc's of the funk genre (Brazil). That is a style created in our country and we are mixing with trap, rap, eMusic. For me, the challenge is to believe in and leave the comfort zone.
How do you promote yourself? Do you have any specific promotion tips for other musicians?
I myself try to be attentive to all kinds of publicity and promotion. But it takes a lot of time so I always look for some resources in specialized companies because it's no use spending your energies on something that you lack the ability and gain time with quality. I can not have everything is every moment.
We meet again in one year. What has happened?
Much has changed and with each new job, more experience is acquired. Listening to old mixes became cold
