Cloud Mac

Please introduce yourself real quick…

My name is Cloud Mac and I'm a recording artist from the United Kingdom. That's the coolest I can make that sound! I've been making music for about six months now and I've seen some really cool growth, which is pretty encouraging.

What do you do?

I record mainly Hip-Hop, but I've recorded a bunch of alternative rock as well. Lately I've just been focusing on growth and trying to perfect my sound. I'm a long way from accomplishing that, but hey – I'm trying my best! I like to think my music is good to cry to. I put my feelings to paper and I feel like I am super transparent with my music. What you're hearing is how I'm feeling at the time I recorded it. The fact that people seem to relate to what I'm doing is so amazing. I know I'm only at the beginning of this journey, but to see this much support and positivity towards my message is super humbling. It's hard not to get carried away sometimes.

I've been working with some really talented people from around the world. You might have caught a few features I did with Chris Wright and Atwood from Off The Jump. All of those guys are super talented. I've also been working with a rapper called Miles Powers from Portland who is super slept on. Other than that, I don't really want to give too much away, but I've got some plans to work with a rapper called Atlas who has always been a massive inspiration to me, and so I'm lowkey freaking out a bunch. I got a record coming out with a guy called Dahm soon too! He's great. You can expect more collabs with Halberd and Colliding With Mars as well!

What´s new right now?

I mean, you can always expect new singles from me, that's guaranteed. I guess the question everyone wants to ask me about is 'when's the tape coming?', and to be honest, all I can say is that it is definitely coming. I just don't know when. The way I look at it is, I'm evolving and growing at such a fast rate, and I don't want to put out a project that's not the best I can do. There is an LP. It's fully recorded. Some of it's been mixed. I just, I just don't know if it's the LP I want to show the world. It's my very first extended project, so it's like an introduction to me. An introduction to Cloud Mac. I hate first impressions!

Are you a superfan of anyone? How did you become a superfan? Do you remember how you become a fan and what turned you into super fan? Have you ever thought about why you´re such a fan?

I am super emo, when I was younger I was a My Chemical Romance superfan. Even today I'm just trying to be Gerard Way on a daily basis.

What was the biggest mistake you made when you started making music and what would be the number one tip you could give to a newcomer musician?

I feel like new musicians can make the mistake of collaborating too much. I know it's a super good way to learn, but if you're small, and relatively new to music, it's easy to lose a sense of your own panache. You should focus on finding YOUR sound, that should be your very first goal with your music. Find out musically, what makes you, you!

Do you have good promotion tips for other musicians?

To be honest I'm not that great at promotion. Some of my friends are really good at it though. In my opinion though, I would say knowing your audience is one of the best ways to effectively promote. Ask yourself who are you making music for? Are you making 1940s Jazz that the elderly will be bumping at the care home 24/7? If yes, your promotion should be tailored to that. What do those old jazz heads want to see? And what's the easiest way you could reach them? For me it's sad emo kids and everybody knows they live on twitter. That's why I'm always on there!

Do you have insights on how to grow your audience on soundcloud that you want to share with our audience?

At the beginning I would say it's all about exposure. It's funny, you can see really talented artists on Soundcloud who are making really high quality music, but only have 200 followers. On the flip side you can see artists who maybe aren't as talented as others but have 2,000, 3,000, maybe 4,000 followers! I think the difference is exposure. You got to work for it, send your music to blogs, try and get noticed by a bigger artist. It really is a grind. I think a good way to get more attention on Soundcloud is utilise other platforms as well. Use YouTube, Bandcamp, Twitter, etc… Social media is a great tool if you use it right.

How do you personally discover new music?

I mainly use Soundcloud. I know it gets a lot of shtick, but I honestly think it's a great platform. It's changed the music industry for good, and allows amateur artists to get their voices heard.
