Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?
My name is dEVOLVE. I’m a DJ/Producer from Florida that specializes in Caribbean influenced electronic and trap music, but considers myself a boundary pusher, rebelling against traditional genre limitations in music. For me, it’s not about genres or labels. It’s about blending influences and the rhythms from around the world to reach a new energy. I’m not just about stepping outside the box, I’m here to blow the box up, and throw a party where the box once sat.
I’ve been lucky so far to have collaborated with some amazing artists, and have been supported by a ton of people with great platforms that have helped me grow my fanbase. I’m probably most known for my single “Higher” featuring Red Rat, but I’ve also collaborated with amazing talent like the legendary dancehall group T.O.K., Richie Loop, DJ Buddha, Fly Boi Keno, and on my latest single, Angela Hunte.
Things have been moving fast lately, and I closed out 2017 with a very special guest mix for Diplo & Friends on BBC Radio 1.
In that mix I played all my best tracks I’ve released so far, plus a ton of brand new stuff that isn’t out yet!
Aside from my original tracks, I’ve done some remixes that have done really well and got tons of support from DJs all over the world. My unofficial remix for Calvin Harris “Slide” went sort of viral and was one of the most played remixes of 2017 according to the POOL Track Trends Remix Charts, and in the fall I got a chance to remix Major Lazer’s “Particula” for the free “Know No Better” Major Lazer remix EP that Walshy Fire put together with Flex Up Crew (a Future Dancehall music collective I’m a part of). I also was hired to remix a couple of big pop records for Atlantic Records, Portugal. The Man’s “Feel It Still” and Charlie Puth’s “How Long”!
In addition to all that music, I also launched a weekly radio show last summer called “dEVOLVE Radio” that airs Saturday Nights on FYAH 105 FM in Jamaica, and worldwide streaming on DASH Radio’s flagship “DASH1 Channel”. How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?
I got started as a producer making hip hop beats, and grew over time to work on all different genres before finding my space and creating my sound that sits somewhere between EDM, Dancehall and Trap music. I think over time my taste has definitely changed and expanded, but ever since the golden era of dancehall I’ve always felt like the early 2000’s dancehall records are timeless and I feel like what I’m doing, as well as many others are doing with the “Future Dancehall” movement, is bringing that timeless dancehall energy but with the bang and aggression of big room EDM or trap music.
What´s new right now?
My new single is out now everywhere, called “The Unknown” featuring Angela Hunte. Getting a chance to work with Angela was an amazing experience, she’s one of the sickest writers in music (she wrote & won a Grammy for writing “Empire State Of Mind” with Jay-Z), and as opposed to just making another club banger this track feels a little more aggressive with some strong social overtones, something that just feels special and necessary today with the world we are living in. I’ve got a TON of new music I’m working on finalizing release plans for, including a new EP that I hope to get out by the Spring of 2018. Last week I played my first show in NYC at Knitting Factory in Brooklyn, and I’m gearing up for some special appearances in March during Miami Music Week. Details coming soon!
