Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?
My name is DJ Keegan. Predominantly a bass house & DnB DJ from the North East of England! I am a self taught DJ and have been DJing around 4 years. However, not all 4 of those years were DJing very well! I started DJing on a very basic Hercules, 2 channel mixer with virtual DJ on my laptop, in my bedroom at university. At the beginning it was very much a trial error and basis. I had no idea about adjusting tempo or anything. I was basically trying to just switch in different drops of different songs. One may have been 140 bpm and the other may have been 174 bpm. If I were to listen back now it would have been awful, but I wouldn't have learned any other way! I progressively improved, moving onto more complex equipment and started getting DJ gigs at some small local clubs down the country in St Ives. At the moment I have just gotten into very basic production and trying to start producing my own tracks and have recently been doing a weekly slot at a club in Sunderland.
How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?
Over the years my music has changed substantially. I have always been fond of the heavier side of music. When I was in school I liked rock and heavy metal. As I got older my taste changed from rock music into more electronic music. I was listening to some EDM when it first got big, which admittedly at the time, I loved! The main tracks that spring to mind are Tujamo and Dr.Who, which were fairly bassy EDM tracks. I then discovered dub-step and drum & bass and this was around the time when I was old enough to start going to clubs. I remember we went out to a couple of clubs on a monday night in Sunderland and this was the first time I heard songs by Datsik and Sub Focus and that was when my love for the heavier side of electronic music truly began. When I was at uni I got into more, sort of, jackin' house. That was when I first heard songs by Chris Lorenzo and Cause & Affect, which at the time I didn't know he was a part of. Lorenzo is definitely my most listened to artist at the moment and watching and listening to his sets, is definitely where I get my inspiration. He infuses such an eclectic mix of music into his sets from heavy bass tunes, to funky disco tracks to minimal tech. Its through listening to him that I have discovered other artists in the bass scene that now help shape my sets, such as Taiki Nulight, My Nu Leng, Holy Goof and Flava D. This flavour of music is where my current taste lies at the moment. If I was going to play a set of tracks that were all selected by me and I had no restrictions on what to play, this is the type of music i'd be selecting. However, don't get me wrong I am still very much into other genres. Stevie Wonder is probably my favourite artist of all time and seeing him live in 2016 in Hyde Park was absolutely amazing, so I do try to sneak in some funkier stuff, but only if it fits!
What´s new right now?
At the moment I am in the middle of a relocation back down the country so I'm not DJing anywhere at the moment. I will be getting back into this when I'm settled and aim to try and increase the love for bass music across the country. The main thing I want people to do though, is go out and have a good time. I feel a lot of people these days, go out with the pure motive of not remembering anything. I want to promote going out, enjoying the music and having a boogie! I have also just gotten into the early stages of production. This is where I'm next hoping to take my love of music. I regularly submit mixes, usually every few months of the year, onto my soundcloud. These mixes usually include all the songs I enjoy playing out at that moment in time, as well trying to throw in some golden oldies! I hope to see you at some Keegan gigs sometime soon!
