Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

My name is Niko, and I produce a variety of different styles of House music. I come from a melodic background, so I tend to favour the melodic and groovy sides of House music. I play a lot of G House, Nu Disco, and Brazilian Bass in my DJ sets, and I really enjoy writing tunes for the dance floor, but I also write some more melodic stuff that doesn't necessarily make a DJ set. I love banging House drops, but I also love music that pulls on your emotions, so I try to pull from both poles and meet somewhere in the middle.

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

I would definitely say my tastes have changed a lot over the years. I've always had a pretty wide spectrum of music I found interesting. Pink Floyd has always been a major influence on me and I also really enjoy Blues music, like Stevie Ray Vaughn and Freddie King. The soul in those 3 artists in my opinion, is completely unmatched in todays music. In Electronic music, Nero is definitely my biggest influence, and I also really like Porter Robinson, Glitch Mob, Pendulum, Nora En Pure, Zhu, and so many more.
Anything with soul and emotion in music really draws me in. I get inspired by watching true artists in any genre.

What´s new right now?

Today I dropped a new G House remix of Zhu – Faded, the dance music classic from a couple of years ago. It's available for free on my SoundCloud, and just in time for Christmas <3

Also, last week I dropped a new 1 hour DJ mix on my SoundCloud, full of groovy house tunes for the dance floor or your living room.

How do you get gigs? Can you share any tips?

Pretty much all of my gigs have come through networking on Facebook and applying to festivals when they open applications. If you have a hard time getting gigs, I would suggest putting together a solid 1 hour DJ mix and applying to every festival in your area. They usually open applications in January-March, so you have to think ahead to get those summer bookings.

How do you personally discover new music?

I like to sift through Spotify playlists and related artists, and I do the same on SoundCloud. For my DJ sets I find a lot of the stuff I like comes from South America, and I came across all of it just searching through related artists on SoundCloud. Spotify has shown me hundreds of new artists that I may have never heard due to their awesome playlists.

Once you discovered new music, do you tell others about the new music/artist you discovered? If yes, how exactly?

What is your number one tip to improve your music production or songwriting skills?

I don't have just one tip, as I think thats too hard of a question to answer.

Listen to Podcasts, watch YouTube tutorials, deconstruct presets, study music theory, and listen to music critically and try to pick apart what your favourite artists are doing in their songs layer by layer.

For podcasts I would highly suggest EdmProd. Sam Matla is a massive help to all learning producers, and his podcast is filled with helpful tips from real artists and industry professionals. Also check out his blog for great articles.

Music Theory is a big hurdle for a lot of musicians, and there is one book series that has helped me more than anything else I've seen. Its called Music Theory for Computer Musicians, and Harmony for Computer Musicians. These books teach you the basics and advanced techniques in music theory and they do it with the Piano Roll we are all so familiar with. Super helpful books and recommend 100% to everyone learning the craft.

Also, using reference tracks for mixing and mastering is definitely a game changer.

What is your best tip for those who struggle with finishing their tracks?

Use a pen and notepad and write out notes as you work through your song. Listen to it a couple of times on repeat, at different volume levels and write out every little thing that needs to be fixed. Then just go through them one by one. Also use a couple of reference tracks and compare them to yours, write down the differences that you need to improve on. Rinse and repeat until you're finished.
