Frank Yola

Please introduce yourself real quick…

Definition: "Yola" (pronounced: yo-LA)
(Origin: US, California)
1 : Slang term for cocaine

Los Angeles-based lyricist Frank Yola is a rising hip-hop artist known for his clever metaphors, skilled wordplay and sharp delivery, expertly blending innovative beats with shrewd rhyme-schemes to create a uniquely "dope" sound.

What do you do?

With his distinct lyrical flow and deep baritone voice, Frank Yola stands out among other up-and-coming MC's with an original sound and solid work ethic that spans over 10 years, 12 mixtapes, an album, and countless features from artists across the globe, including Emilio Rojas and Grammy-nominated rapper/Dr. Dre protégé Knoc-turn'al.

In addition to writing, producing, and engineering all of his own music, Frank Yola also produces other artists in his "White House" recording studio located in Los Angeles, CA. Performing at clubs and venues throughout the California area, Frank Yola and has opened up for such prominent hip-hop artists as Twista and Afroman.

What´s new right now?

Frank Yola recently released the album "spaceDOPE", produced entirely by Milwaukee beat-maker Spacecrime, available now on all streaming platforms.

He's currently at work mixing and mastering his next two albums "Cokecain Flow", dropping in August, and his self-titled album "Yola", in addition to recording a follow-up project with collaborator Spacecrime as well as another collaboration album with LA producer Philthy Beats.

Having just finished shooting the music video for the single "Stain Remover" off his self-titled album "Yola", Frank is expected to drop the single and video for the song later next month.

Are you a superfan of anyone? How did you become a superfan? Do you remember how you become a fan and what turned you into super fan? Have you ever thought about why you´re such a fan?

I wouldn't say I'm a "superfan" of any particular artist but I listen to, respect, admire and draw inspiration from a lot of musicians out there. When it comes to hip-hop, you can find a lot of underground cats in my playlist like Willie the Kid, Fred Da Godson Rigz and a shit ton of others. Other than hip-hop, I fuck with anything that sound good from Adele to Johnny Cash to Beethoven. You gotta be eclectic!

What has been your biggest challenge right now? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?

The biggest challenge I'm facing as an artist right now is finding my own fanbase of supporters and standing out from the huge sea of so-called MCs out there vying for attention. But as long as I continue to make good music and get it out to as many people as possible, it's only a matter of time before people recognize the real.

What is your number one tip to improve your music production or songwriting skills?

Learn how to engineer your own music. Don't leave the sound of your music up to whoever is behind the boards. Like the old adage says, if you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself.

What is your best tip for those who struggle with finishing their tracks?

Don't give up! Keep working at it. Take time away from it if you need to in order to let the creative juices replenish. Don't force it but don't get complacent.

We meet again in one year. What has changed?

I blew the fuck up! haha Nah, but seriously, in 12 months I planned to have dropped the 4 or 5 projects I've been working on included the self-titled album I been cooking up for years now and hopefully have found a fanbase and steady revenue stream from this music shit.
