GDLK (Godlike Dubstep)

Read the GDLK (Godlike Dubstep) Interview below and share it on social media.

Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

My name is GDLK (Godlike) and I write heavy bass music!

To be more specific, I am trying to write music that will tell a story and move people from the inside out. My goal is to build a community platforms like YouTube, Soundcloud and Instagram to connect and build with those who have a fascination for the weird, the crazy, and the extraterrestrial.

You can connect with the experience by following @GDLKdub on instagram/Soundcloud/Facebook and find the music on Spotify/iTunes/and most online music outlets.

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

Music has been a huge influence throughout my entire life! I grew up in a very musical family and that started to develop my musical skills and abilities at a young age. I was lucky enough to have gone through several schools of practice with live performance, composition, and even scientific study, to help round and develop a very unique sense of musical creation and interpretation.

The main factor that drew me to electronic music over the traditional forms of musical expression, was the ability to create worlds and atmospheres that were unattainable with an orchestra or symphony. The Glitch Mob was a hugely influential group for me in that they showed me that a musical arrangement can be an opening to a different world and even a different state of mind.

Over the years I have explored sounds from trip hop to festival trap, deep house to happy-hard-core and loved an aspect of every genre of music I have ever heard. Taking small and effective techniques from these different styles and using traditional music theory has allowed for my sound and tonality to grow and develop.

What was the biggest mistake you made when you started making music and what would be the number one tip you could give to a newcomer musician?

My biggest mistake that I made when I first started out is over-complicating what I was doing. From my sound design process all the way to my arrangement, everything was so complicated because I had so many ideas I wanted to portray. This was a hard habit to break (I personally still battle with this issue every time I write) but as I do, I notice my melodies and chord progressions are becoming a lot more memorable and a lot more emotionally effective, which was the goal the whole time!

What has been your biggest challenge right now? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?

The biggest musical challenge that I am facing and have faced multiple times in the past is the issues of a plateau of production activity and quality. What i mean by that is when my sound design gets to a point that is won't develop any further or i feel like i have exhausted my resources and can't seem to make any progress. Usually this happens when I am fixated on one aspect of a production or a production skill and I fail to explore outside of that. When writing this down, the answer is simple: do something new. Make some changes in your environment, in your inspiration, in the way you write and let the experience shape your new sounds and production flow. Currently, I am fixated on the idea of working with a vocalist and I have had little luck finding one that works well with me. To mediate this, I have been working on productions that are less focused on vocals and more focused on musicality and arrangement and that alone has already allowed for me to write music I wouldn't have imagined in my previous mind state.

How do you personally discover new music?

One of my favorite ways to discover new music and new artists is by exploring the depths of Souncloud and YouTube to see what it holds.

Because these platforms are so "open-faced" as far as letting user upload any content they want. This can warrant for some amazing content as well as a some duds but the fun of exploring these platforms is finding what works and what doesn't and taking that and applying it to what you/your group is doing. Sometimes, you can even find artists that are under-produced and have even lead to some amazing collaborations and loyal friendships.

Once you discovered new music, do you tell others about the new music/artist you discovered? If yes, how exactly?

What is your number one tip to improve your music production or songwriting skills?

The obvious answer here is to practice.

The more in depth answer here is to practice and learn from what you are doing. By that I mean take a step back, frequently, to look at what you are doing and how you are doing it and see if the average joe would even be interested in what you are doing. Learning how to take a non-bias look at your project is going to be the biggest factor as to how your project will progress.

Be honest to yourself, be ruthless with your drive, and be aware of yourself.
