Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

Hello world,

My name is Jaunter and I produce synth based music inspired by 80s film soundtracks, hip-hop, video games, and the universe. My main goal has always been to produce music I want to hear and to have fun doing it. The fact that other people are listening AND enjoying what I'm putting out still blows my mind.

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

My introduction to the music world was the piano. My dad plays, so when I was growing up there was always a piano, keyboard or organ in the house. I took lessons for a few years but never could get myself to practice seriously.
The next big influence came from video games. Specifically the NES and Sega Genesis. I would play games for hours and hours and subsequently listen to their soundtracks over and over. This ingrained that signature 8-bit sound into my head. Sine, Square, Triangle, and Sawtooth waves have an indelible nostalgia to them unlike any other sound. Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Sonic are all huge influences.

I was always fascinated with the weird synth sounds that emerged from 80s pop music. Driving around with my dad during road trips listening to the 80s stations are some of my fondest memories.

Hip-hop also comes into play when shaping my sound. I always loved a catchy, head-bobbing beat. Powerful kicks, snappy snares, and catchy synth bass lines are essential to a good song. That's usually what comes first in my writing process.

I take a lot of influence from Classical music as well. The interesting riffs and counter melodies that you hear so often had a big impact on me.

Lastly, the modern synthwave movement that emerged into the mainstream in 2009 and really picked up steam in 2014 finally convinced me to start making my own music and releasing it to the judgement of the world.

What´s new right now?

This past summer I released a full-length album that I'm very proud of called Coping Mechanism. It's a bit more melancholy than music I've made in the past but still contains some upbeat tracks.
My most recent release is a soundtrack for a short horror film called You Will Be Killed on the Midnight Hill. It was the first time I've been commissioned by someone to make music. It was an awesome process and experience and I'm extremely happy with how it turned out.

Aside from that, I'm working on few tracks that I might just release as singles. The past two holiday seasons I've made holiday-themed singles so I think I will continue that tradition this year. I'm in the early stages of a new album but I don't expect anything will come of that until late next year. You never know though, sometimes inspiration will hit you hard and songs will flow like water.

Until then, I'm just going with the flow!

What is your number one tip to improve your music production or songwriting skills?

One easy tip to help your tracks sound less "muddy" is by cutting out unnecessary frequencies to specific sounds. This means using a low pass filter on your bass sounds and high-pass filter on mid and high sounds. Don't go overboard on cutting out frequencies, just enough that you barely notice a difference when you turn the filter on and off. This will save space in your mix and give each sound some breathing room. It's a little bit more complicated than that but it's a good starting point.

What is your best tip for those who struggle with finishing their tracks?

Sometimes a long break from a song is all you need. I've had moments where I will start 4 new projects until I finally go back to an older unfinished track. Time away will let you hear it with "fresh" ears and can help inspire you to finish.
It's hard though so don't get discouraged.

We meet again in one year. What has changed?

Hopefully I have more new music released into the world, and it sounds better than past releases.
