Johnny Gun Fingaz

Read the Johnny Gun Fingaz Interview below and share it on social media.

Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

Born in Southampton Johnny Gun Fingaz started Djing at the tender age of 14 in 1996 by throwing his own parties either in his house or in scout huts alongside his long term friend and DJ, Ollie J. These parties became a regular occurrence and a following was built through friends and his school year, these parties became the start of Johnny’s Promoting journey and nightclubs soon followed.
Johnny’s love for UK Garage started while listening to a Garage Nation tape in 1999 mixed by none other than the Dreem Teem’s Timmi Magic, this tape changed it all.
Johnny had his own night at the time at The Beach nightclub in Southampton mainly playing commercial house and trance, however on this night Johnny dropped his first UK Garage set and received a reaction unlike any he had ever achieved and this was the start of his UK Garage path.

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

Coming from Southampton we were blessed to have a whole range of talent from the UK Garage world such as the Artful Dodger and Craig David and I loved listening to the DJ Luck and MC Neat Kiss CD’s all of which strengthened my love for the scene.
I was lucky enough to work in one of Southampton’s best record shop’s Adrenalin Records formally Movement Records owned by Stu J, and I was actually given the job at the time by Gavin Foord who is now the main face behind the UK Garage group FooR, during this time I got to meet a lot of local and national talent and got exposed to a lot of music that I may not of heard if it was not for the shop, all of this exposure helped to shape my career in various ways as well as open doors and opportunities.
When I play out I like to pack that dance floor, so I always like to play the biggest tracks I can and the ones that I think people will know and go crazy for when I drop them.
This topped off with a great MC works wonders, and I tend to DJ most of my live sets alongside MC Winston, we’ve been working together now for years and it just works.
All of this has reflected in my producing and I like to remix big commercial tracks with vocals, and I think one big influence on me has always been Sunship. I love the way that Sunship can take a vocal track, put his spin to it and turn it into a UK Garage anthem, and I have always admired his work for that reason, Just look at Sweet Female Attitude Flowers for instance.
I think the difference for me today in 2018 is the big bassline aspect of the scene, there are many artists that incorporate this into their sound but FooR just nail it for me.
My early producing career started out with me and Ollie J, just learning, then I was fortunate enough to meet Steve Ranger through the record shop who taught me a lot early on, I have also worked with Alex Taylor and for a couple of years now I have been lucky enough to work with Jon Doe who has really helped me to develop my sound and learn more as a producer.

What´s new right now?

In 2018 I am currently working a lot more on Djing funnily enough, I think the days of just being able to mix two records together just don’t cut it anymore, so I’d like to be technically better.
I am currently doing some sets for a company called Uplifted who have done very well with their nights so I am looking forward to those.
I have a new track coming out with Damien Murdoch called Be Around You, we are just finalising the bits and pieces with the label so that should be out soon.
As from that there are plenty of original bits and pieces waiting for vocals to go on so the tracks can be finished and there are also some new remixes on the way as well.
