Who are you and what do you do?
Who am I? That is always a great philosophical question. I am a true music lover who has held many positions throughout the music industry. For me, the music business is as much a passion as the music itself.
Indie Band Guru is an online Music Magazine and Artist Development Company focused on helping independent bands build their careers and get the exposure they deserve. We have just launched the #KnowledgeToGetKnown project to add more ways to teach and coach artists in the independent scene. 2018 will be the year the independents take back the music industry.
From your perspective: What is a typical mistake that artists make?
Following the old music business model is something I see far too many artists still doing. The industry has changed dramatically and we all need to change with it to achieve our goals.
One of my current pet peeves is the artist (or even their PR companies) that are sending out mass template emails. This is not the best way to get press coverage, radio play, Spotify playlisted, etc. From being on the music blogger side I can say how annoying this is and how it is a perfect way to get your email deleted without even being read.
With the ability of the internet, we can now form personal relationships with these important industry people. Take the time to get to know the person before just pitching them your music. 25 real relationships will outperform 1000 mass emails every time.
What makes you different from others in the field and what should readers who are interested in your services do next?
There are too many people out there offering a "shortcut" to music fame and fortune. Just send them money and they will handle it all for you. Really? Are you gullible enough to think this will work?
There is no easy way to be successful. I am not here to blow smoke up your butt and will have the hard conversations with you. It is hard work but with the right plan, a sustainable career is achievable. With the new Knowledge To Get Known project we sit down and develop a roadmap of what YOU need to do to make it happen. You could not pay me enough to make me do it for you. A career will never last this way.
We are currently looking for a few artists to be part of the launch of the #KnowledgeToGetKnown project. Head over to bit.ly/IBGcampaign to see what it is all about.

Do you have good promotion tips for other musicians?
As a musician, you have to get out there and be a part of the scene. No one will notice you hiding in your bedroom studio just because you put some good music on Soundcloud. Whether it be by going to your local music venues, becoming a part of it, and talking with people or joining online communities and being a contributing member you have to be social. People will normally support someone that they feel are supporting them. Show your value, not just the value of your music, but your value as a person.

How do you personally discover new music?
There are so many great ways to discover new music nowadays. I personally love finding Spotify playlists by independent curators and letting them play. These are music fans just like you and me that have a passion for sharing their discoveries without the influence of the major labels or big PR companies.
