Late Night Disco

Read the Late Night Disco Interview below and share it on social media.

Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

We are Late Night Disco, a London based disco DJing duo that have been running club nights, DJing and hosting rooms/events for over four years. We started in Birmingham running club nights and after a year moved to London to pursue our DJ careers. We quickly became regulars at Brick City Funk and Fever 105s events at Brixton Jamm. We've supported the likes of Norman Jay, Dusky, Rudimental, Bondax, Oliver Nelson, Tobtok and Rayko. Over the years we've teamed up with some of Londons best Disco heads, creating a new collective that supports the huge disco community in the city, such as Shut the Front Door, Tail and Twist,
Pangaea Disco, CTRL Sound and Cirque Du Soul. Our mixes have won competitions for Mixmag and Data Transmission, and we have hosted many of the Coors Light Ice Bars around the UK. Recently we hosted a stage at YNOT festival and played a five hour set at El Dorado festival. We've played some amazing venues, Brixton Jamm, XOYO, Oval Space, Rolling Stock, Shoreditch Platform, The Rainbow, Beaver Works, Joshua Brooks and many others around the UK. For 2018 we are embarking on our regular hosts at the Queen Of Hoxton, were we decorate, shower confetti and have our usual 80s style visuals playing all night. This year we have six hosts booked in the calendar and at each one, we will be teaming up with someone from the collective. We've also been booked for El Dorado again this year and cannot wait for more bookings to come in. 2018 is going to be a really exciting year for us, and we can't thank everyone enough for their love and support for the music we play!

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

We pride ourselves on being at the forefront of disco, we mainly play edits and reworks of tunes people know and love. Artists like Joey Negro, Dr Packer, Late Nite Tuff Guy, Dimitri from Paris and labels like Midnight Riot are pushing the boundaries in the genres we love. For us it all started when we went to see Nile Rodgers and Chic at the Wearhouse Project in Manchester, what a treat that gig was, the room was full of love and dancing groovers, the crowd didn't stop moving all night. Seeing Nile come back with a huge tour, playing Glastonbury and gig all year round since, really shows a work ethic that resonates with us. He works with new artists and groups all the time and constantly stretches his musical abilities. Although we don't make our own music, yet, Niles love for what he does is something we can relate to. We both have other work commitments outside of our DJing/Events and we will always find the time to do what we love and keep pushing to work with others, not in competition, to create the best experience for clubbers and disco lovers.

The music is the real reason we are here, it sounds like something everyone says, but both of us really do love the music we play. DJing is always a fine balance between playing music people will love to dance to and playing music you've found to educate the crowd on your taste. Joey Negro is an artist we've seen again and again for many years, he's someone who understands his gig and realises what the audience want to hear but throws in that Joey twist. We got the pleasure to go to Fever105s 5th birthday party at Oval Space in London, the venue was set, huge disco ball, colourful lights and the DJ booth set at the front of the stage with a dance area behind and around the booth! He was playing an all night long seven-hour set, this truly was a journey into his love for disco. We danced and of course had Shazam on auto all night. This was a real highlight for us, such a great influence showing off the music and edits he's made. We would love to be playing events like that at his age, such an inspiration!

Our music taste has grown up over time, when we started events where we'd DJ at as well, our music tended to be more mainstream original versions. Some say these are 'Bangers' but we quickly learnt that you can't have a full set of bangers, you need some mash in there too. As time went on, we started seeing more disco DJs around the country, every gig we went to opened our eyes to someone else's taste in disco music. We started scouring Soundcloud, traxsource, Youtube, almost every resource we could, for the best edits and reworks. Recently we've started to notice a real difference in music we play out compared to the music we listen to, it's almost like a boot camp. You find a track you like, listen to it for a few weeks and If it's good enough it will make the cut to be played out. One of the big differences, since we started, is how we rework tracks to suit DJing better, we make extended versions and cut out bits of tracks we may not like. We've always loved disco music, but now we actively seek new music to play out, you just end up building a huge collection of all types of funk, disco, nu disco, boogie, house, and that only comes with experience and time.

What´s new right now?

Right now we want to keep working on getting new gigs and creating the best disco events we can. Our ambitions and plans for the year are huge, we have our own edits and reworks in the making and have some big events we are working on in the coming months. We want to keep playing festivals and look at playing gigs abroad as well as playing new venues in and around London. We would love to get back to making regular mixes and live streaming our gigs!

If you, or you know anyone, who wants to create a disco event in the UK, get in touch, we are always up for a party! Up and coming we have our regular hosts at Queen Of Hoxton throughout 2018, they are always really fun, and we are playing at Cirque Du Souls El Dorado festival in the summer amoung others. To find out more about our up and coming gigs check out our Facebook page. If this year is anything like the last, new gigs and events come up all the time, so stay tuned!

Thanks,

Late Night Disco x
