Read the MARIO BEE DJ Interview below and share it on social media.
Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?
My name is Mario Bee, I'm from New York State and I've been a DJ for about 10 years. I currently live in Astoria, Queens, NYC.
My first featured track was released on Tiefparterre in Graz, Austria in 2013, https://soundcloud.com/tiefparterre-records/sets/mario-bee-tomb-ep. My collaborators include rapper/tv producer Mike Gerbino, Graphic artist/tattoer Mic Excel, and R&B artist GETOVERHER. Bass, Grime, Dubstep, Garage, and Baile Funke are some of my favorite genres to play. Although, I can't say I'm beholden to just a select few genres as I collect vinyl and love to play rare grooves and left-field finds whenever I get the chance.
How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?
I inherited my musical influences from family members as music was an integral part of my upbringing. My parents were quite young when I was born so many pop, dance, hip-hop and r&b hits from the 80's and 90's were my first thrust into music.
Through the years of "rebellious" and experimental periods of my adolescence peaked my interest in punk, metal, and harder electronic music. This would be a foundation for my foray into DJing.
By the time I was a university student I had amassed quite a few Dubstep and early Grime records from the UK. I was completely swept away by the atmospheres producers were concocting through reverberated sub-bass, and thrashing bpms.
Now that I'm producing more, my influences come from any and everywhere. I'm back to experimenting, but now with production techniques and foriegn sounds to develop my own soundscapes to tell my half of the story.
What´s new right now?
Currently I have a project produced entirely by myself with Mike Gerbino out now via bandcamp, https://concern.bandcamp.com/album/point-of-no-concern-2-2017. We're very proud of this project. It spans over 2 years in the making, and features scratches and cuts from our good friend DJ Nique of the Bronx, and also features the lovely vocals of ZuZu on "Politique." This project is for anyone pissed off with the current administration, for those we lost due to police brutality, and anyone with a conscious mind.
I also have another project out now with Mic Excel, via Soundcloud, https://soundcloud.com/mariobeedj/god-save-the-queen-4?in=mariobeedj/sets/god-save. The EP is available for download as a mix. God Save The Queen began as an idea between Mic Excel and myself in response to our affinity for all things Buffalo, New York. Its trippy, full of quirky rap humor, and plenty of references to Buffalo, New York.
Lastly, I have a remix of EDM artist EDALO's tune "Don't Call Me Baby," available for free on Soundcloud, https://soundcloud.com/mariobeedj/dont-call-me-remix.
