Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

I'm Matt, I'm 22 and I live just outside of London. I've been producing music and DJing for the last 9 years. My music is heavily influenced by Trance and Happy Hardcore of the latter part of the 2000's, and also pop music and EDM of the last 5 years. If I had to liken my sound to particular artists, it would be Manse, Audien, Madeon and Darren Styles. My goal with all of my music under this alias is to convey a real sense of melodic energy, with enough pop influence to be catchy, but with drops that lift you off your feet! If you like catchy, melodic and powerful electronic music, then you'll most likely enjoy my tracks!

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

I used to listen to a huge variety of music when I was a kid, thanks mainly to having a Dad who was (and still is) a fan of a huge variety of music. When I was a teenager, I got really into Trance music, with artists like Jon O'Bir, Paul Van Dyk, Mat Zo and Arty. This cemented my interest in feel good, melodic music that has a real drive to it. I later started to get really into Happy/UK Hardcore, learning how to produce and DJ with the genre and receiving some crucial mentoring from big DJs and MCs that helped shape my attitude towards electronic music and my production work ethic. I'm into every conceivable form of electronic music, but outside of this I'm really into Hard Rock, Post-Hardcore, Pop Punk, Hip-Hop, Grime and Jazz.

What´s new right now?

My next release is coming out at the end of this month – it's a remix for an upcoming LA-based artist called Josh Dreon. The track itself is something completely new and different for me, as it is very much a modern pop and EDM infusion. I'm also working on a lot of bass music with my alternative alias 'INVRSE', as bass music is firmly at the forefront of UK electronic music again and it's a really exciting time to be a producer of bass genres!

Are you a superfan of anyone? How did you become a superfan? Do you remember how you become a fan and what turned you into super fan? Have you ever thought about why you´re such a fan?

I'm definitely a Superfan of Manse. He's not the biggest DJ in the world but he should definitely be up there! In my opinion he makes some of the best Progressive House out there, and truly is a pioneer of the Swedish sound, especially since Swedish House Mafia disbanded.

What was the biggest mistake you made when you started making music and what would be the number one tip you could give to a newcomer musician?

Being lazy when it came to learning about mixdowns and the processes behind achieving a fantastic mix. In hindsight, I think my melodies 8 years ago were just as good as they are now, but my mixdowns were awful and so were my sample/sound choices. Out of laziness, I would use the same tired old sounds rather than finding the right ones or developing my own presets. If you're a newcomer, learn the technical ins and outs of what is behind a professional sounding track – melodies will only take you so far!

What is your number one tip to improve your music production or songwriting skills?

Find accountability partners. By this, I mean find other producers who are (preferably) of a similar or slightly better standard than you, and learn everything you can from them. Get in the studio with them if possible and see what plugins they use, how they process sound, how the creative process works for them.etc. Send them tracks to get feedback on whenever possible and action their feedback. This is by far the quickest and most realistic way for you to improve as quickly as possible, and it also serves as an external motivator, as there's nothing like a bit of collaborative, healthy competition!

What is your best tip for those who struggle with finishing their tracks?

Render your track, listen to it start to finish. Put yourself in a listeners shoes. Make a list of everything that doesn't sit right with you. It could be sound choice, a fill that doesn't sound tight enough – anything! After finishing the first listen, action all of the points on your list. Then repeat. Keep doing this until you aren't writing anything down, or the things that you are seem trivial. Also, frequently AB your productions against tracks that you like.
