Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?
My name is Marc Daniel Rivas (MDR), born and raised in Northern California. As a music producer I am inspired by everything around me, so my goal is to combine everything that I love into one unique experience. When I am not producing as MDR, I work as a sound designer and mixing engineer for film and video games. I think that the level of detail and emotion you can put into audio is equal and relative in both industries.
How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?
I started learning my first instrument in the 4th grade, I played Alto Saxophone. This sparked my interest in music. Later I learned picked up the guitar as a few of my friends started learning other instruments in a rock band. We soon formed a band around 5th grade and as years went on, were influenced by all styles of rock, metal, and punk music. It wasn't until we needed to record a demo that I learned my passion for digital audio production. My cousin gave me a old Macbook, and I saved up money for a digital 8 track recorder. I would then record my band, then spend weeks editing and mixing the audio on my first DAW. It was then I discovered I could control and create just about anything with my computer. After high school I studied to become a Sound Designer, the amount of detail and emotion audio gives a scene in a movie for example really interested me. Learning to appreciate this level of detail translated into my personal productions. I believe the two fields go hand and hand.
What´s new right now?
I have just released 3 projects, they all can be found on my soundcloud page, or searched on Spotify.
"Special Trick" is a call to the classic video game Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. I sampled a few of the game's sounds to create this bass heavy hybrid trap tune.
"Wedous" is a hip hop collaboration with a huge up and comer in Japan, Dirty R.A.Y. I drew from more of a darker lofi influence for this one.
"Process" is another collaboration with Bay Area great, Shimsu. His smooth style was perfect for a beat that I had made inspired by the anime "Ghost in the Shell".
In the first two months of 2018 I will be releasing two new singles, "Nasty" and "Aghast". So be on the look out for those!
