Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?
My name is James (mixile). I’m 17 years old and live in the illawarra in new south wales. I am an electronic music producer and DJ.
How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?
The first time i took a liking to EDM was when joel fletcher & savage released their track “swing”. I took a liking to the upbeat vibe and “dirty” bass and sounds. That’s when i decided i wanted to go down the path of DJ’ing and producing my own electronic music. I started off making melbourne bounce and progressive house because i loved the up beat energy. Nearly four years on i am still producing melbourne bounce but have now taken a liking to many other genres and try to make multiple types of music. I also try to play multiple genres in all of my sets.
What´s new right now?
For the time being i am still just a bedroom DJ with big dreams and goals for the future. I have recently put up a new song on my soundcloud called “Sweet Poison”. It was a different vibe to what i usually make. Adding vocals in the song was definitely a massive change for me and i had a lot of fun doing it.

What was the biggest mistake you made when you started making music and what would be the number one tip you could give to a newcomer musician?
My biggest mistake was posting tracks online when i was no where near ready to be putting my music out there. I let myself be hot headed and cocky. I should have taken the time and put in the effort to learn how to make music properly. My advice is don’t ever be affraid or too cocky to ask for a advice could save your life and keep u from severring your dignity.

Do you have good promotion tips for other musicians?
I promote my music by using various social media platforms. I am also working on building my confidence and promoting myself with people face to face building my fan base a few people at a time. The best tip i have is never be afraid to make the most of the internet and the platforms that allow u to promote your name.

What has been your biggest challenge right now? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?
My biggest challenge right now would be finding the time to make music while also trying to make time for others and work. I’m still working on figuring out that healthy balance. I have not yet overcome it but i feel like i’m getting there. I’m just slowly picking up the pieces and working on getting a routine going.

How do you personally discover new music?
I regularly scroll through my soundcloud feed and keep an ear out for any artists that i think deserve an extra bit of support. If anyone sends me links to their music through DM’s i always take the time to listen and maybe even give feedback.

What is your number one tip to improve your music production or songwriting skills?
I’d say it helps to know at least a little bit about music theory and how to make chord progressions. There r always tutorial videos and free accessible lessons on the internet that can help u in a lot of ways. Take all the advice from the videos and figure out what works for u.
