Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

Hey all, I am Monkixx. I suppose most of you will call me a producer/DJ but I feel thats a bit of a closed book, so prefer to be known as an artist. I create mainly dance music and have done so for a good few years now. My musical production genres vary from Dubstep/Grime through to Garage, Chillout, Wave, Ambient and hip hop. I have always tried to keep it more about the creative side, and not using the Monkixx brand about music but about all types of creative projects. I love to create visuals and graphics, so music is just a portion of what I want the Monkixx branding to be about. I host a the 'Small Talk with Monkixx' Podcasts, where I try to speak to people with a creative background and just have a general chat about life, upcoming projects and whatever's on our minds that day. For those who haven't listened then its on all most of the big podcast sites including, itunes, stitcher, acast, soundcloud etc.. https://soundcloud.com/monkixx/sets/small-talk-with-monkixx

I also co-run the label Route 1 Audio, which also is a multi genre label influenced by bass driven music, we have grown this pretty well over the last few years and even though we've had a good few months off now due to life circumstances, we have now got a larger team involved and are looking to get back to business in 2018, and hopefully have another vinyl compilation out in the new year.

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

What really got me in to dance/bass music as a child was UK Garage, growing up this genre originally got me in to DJing and attempting the production side of things. As I went through school and the first bout of Grime came through and this is where I really fell in love with dance music. I was already DJing but Grime adding the extra aggressiveness I was seeking from Garage that really got me in to production. Over the years Dubstep came through and this also kept my love up for dark dance music around the 140bpm region. The older I am getting and the more I am learning about all things musical and creative the more I fall in love with ambient and chilled out music, music with a lot more depth and emotion, I really feel that Chillout Grime could be a massive thing going forward, a bit like how the chillout dubstep came through, and I would love to see that happen.

What´s new right now?

As of now, I am in the process of a few things that aren't complete. I am working on an EP with Kiite which hopefully will be all finished in the early months of 2018, I also want to try to get an album together for 2018, I have a lot of bits and pieces that I have left unfinished and would love to re visit and maybe use these as album tracks for a big project in 2018. the podcast will also look to grow in 2018, where I hope to get a lot more of the live video podcasts going too and interview a more varied group of individuals. The label will be looking at new releases in the new year also, so alot will be going down on that front. Also some events from the label should be not too far away also once we confirm a venue, so definitely keep an eye out on those.

How do you personally discover new music?

I used to skip through soundcloud for a few hours a week and find new talent by using the Radio/related track options, but I am finding soundcloud to be more annoying as time goes on, so now I tend to head over to bandcamp and just search through the site for genres I like and find new artists.

“I do tend to like and share new artists I enjoy and also share within my social circles, especially with all the Route 1 Audio guys!
