Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

Helllo from the Maldives! My Name is Simon, I make music and iv been a full time DJ in the Maldivian Resort Circuit for about 5 years. Djing came naturally after gigging with different bands as a Drummer and we still play together with our local band "1984" which we formed with my childhood friends back in 1998. Iv also worked in a live electronic chillout project called 'Chi' with my mates Appi, Manal, Shonkey and Ammu.

It terms of some of the music iv made over the years, a highlight would be a track called "Hawwa and Aimina" which has received over 926K views currently. The video was made by an anonymous twitter user and i have to this day never met him, or even the singer who you hear on the song. he uploaded that acapella (which is called a "Madhaha" in local Maldivian Language) and i grabbed the audio from youtube and put some music around it and it has received great reviews locally, (though im not too sure the singer was very happy i grabbed him voice without his permission because it has some religious connotations to it and i live in a very strict muslim country where some people still think music is not part of Islam). oops! but it was never my intention to make people angry or stir up negative emotions in a religious perspective and to this day have made no money out of that song, and i don't intend to.

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

I grew up listening to the my Dad's Sade and Elton John cassettes as a 80's child, was a huge fan of the backstreet boys (yep) as a teenager and then i discovered Rage Against the Machine and Slipknot. My Friend who studied at Uk around late 90's introduced me to Hip Hop and we would spend hours listening to 2pac, The Wu-tang Clan and Nas to name a few. When we formed our local band 1984, we were mostly covering Radiohead and to this day its a huge inspiration for me. Later on in 2012 when i studied in Malaysia for 2 years, i went out to a lot of raves and clubs when heard the track "We Will Survive" by the Warp Brothers and "Coolio" by Isreali producers and DJs Infected Mushrooms and Astrix. I jumped headfirst into the world of electronic and psychadelic music. i danced alot, went out to alot parties and started organising parties in Maldives. One fine day on i holiday in Melbourne, i went to free gig where the UK DJ/Producer Floating Points was playing Jazz Records all night long. I never knew a DJ could even play Jazz but it just worked, and it re-defined for me what Djing is and to this day if probably my biggest inspiration, electronic music wise. I still attend atleast one Psy Trance gathering each year for the past 5 years. Boom festival last in 2016 was mind blowing and i attend every Atman Festival since its inception.

so i love everything from Soul, Jazz, Disco, Conscious Hip Hop, Reggae, Metal, Rock, differnt types of Psy trance and electronic music and everything in between. all its gotta have is some Soul.

"….anybody can DJ, put two reocrds together, we'r good to go, But if you play a record with Passion, Thats real djing!" -DJ Harvey

What´s new right now?

right now im still enjoying djing all around the Maldives, i still dont consider myself a professional music producer but i still work on new tracks during my free time when im not djing and there are some cool collaborations in the pipeline. i like to take everyday as it comes, and don't like making big future plans. just enjoy the present moment and everything else will fall into place organically i guess!
