Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

I'm a music composer born and raised in Spain, although in the last years I've been living in different parts of Europe. Actually, I remember starting making music at the same time that I started imagining journeys: because I always loved a good story. Since then I have written instrumental music for documentaries, animation, theatre, advertising, production companies, video games, art installations, short films and organisations like Greenpeace and the International Red Cross.

I also run the musical inception of Bubo Technologies — a new way of storytelling that brings books and music together to create a more emotional and immersive reading experience. The technology is being developed with some brilliant friends in Switzerland and allows you to read on your phone or tablet with tailor-made music synchronised to the beating heart of the story. The result is breathtaking.

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

My influences are all over the place, which I actually believe is a good thing! Miles Davis, Stravinsky, Björk, John Williams, you name it. I remember discovering jazz at around the same age I started playing piano, I was 8 or 9 years old, and it was like learning a new, exciting language. And the list goes on: classical music — especially from the 19th century onwards —, lots of film music, rock, electronica, world music… Honestly, what's not to love?

With the passing of the years I also learned to appreciate more the technology and production side of music, the delicate balance of sounds, frequencies and rhythms that make a song work, which has helped me greatly to become a better composer. When you write, perform and produce most of your music, like in my case, you need to use technology to your advantage. You need to listen a lot, experiment a lot, and never stop learning.

What´s new right now?

As mentioned before, Bubo is a project I'm really excited about. The idea of making music for classic books, music that evolves and changes according not only to the storyline but also to your own reading speed, is full of amazing possibilities: there is so much jazz, orchestral, electronic, even Indian music hidden in there if you read between the lines. My colleagues are providing state-of-the-art programming, amazing design and communication and we're lucky to feature the art of award-winning illustrators from all over the world. But don't take my word for it: if you want to test our first sample chapters, try our beta app and give us feedback: https://meetbubo.com

Besides that, I'm just working hard on my music. I'm collaborating with several projects at the moment and I can't wait to show you how it turns out. In the meantime, I recently published an album and I'm working with a couple of production companies to release a few more later this year. My current album, 'This & That', is basically a hotchpotch of music written in the last couple of years, unabashedly going from orchestral fantasy to ethnic rhythms and a pinch of industrial rock. The album is out on all major digital platforms, including Bandcamp: https://pablojgarmon.bandcamp.com/album/this-that
