Phuse

Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

Yo! I'm Phuse. I'm from LA and I moved to Brooklyn about 2 years ago. I produce electronic music as well as dj.

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years? Do you feel that changing tastes over years as artistic growth? ?

When I started making music it was all house and electro music. Inspired by guys like Wolfgang Gartner, Kaskade, Justice and Daft Punk. These days my inspirations have gone far back and forward. Back to guys like Zapp & Roger, Earth Wind and Fire and Miles Davis and forward to guys really pushing the boundaries like Haywyre, Lido, Galimatias and Brasstracks. I'm all over the place but I strongly believe that "music" is the most important part of "electronic music". An amazing chord progression will grip me over any sound design. So when I create I really try to focus on that first. I get my music 100% from soundcloud. I follow more than 1000 people and I'm listening to it for about 4 hours every day. If soundcloud every went away I would be the saddest.

What´s new right now?

Just released a new single with my close homie Jo-B Sebastian called "Breathe Again". We're super happy about the support it's gotten and can't wait to release the other songs we're working on. It's been a pleasure working with him and getting these songs just right. Besides that I have a bunch of songs burning a whole in my hard drive that need to see the light of day.

What was the biggest mistake you made when you started making music and what would be the number one tip you could give to a newcomer musician?

Not really when I started but about a year ago I had crazy writers block. One day I gathered up 20 of my absolute favorite songs (including my 2 best productions) and listened to them all day so I could figure out what they had in common. I realized they all had well thought out chord progressions. Somewhere along the path I just kinda got lost in all the knobs. Next day I picked up a jazz theory book. I can't really tell you what I'm playing most of the time but that got me back on track, at least mentally. Everyone's different but at least for me focusing on the chords and lead melody (even if i have to strip it down to just a piano) is the best strategy.
