Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

Hi! My name is Casey Jones and I produce electronic music under the name Port City. I am 22 years old and from Seattle, WA. I aspire to match my personality with my music while still being able to push my creative abilities and explore new parts of both electronic music and myself. With that being said, my music is a mix of both chill and dancy. It's something you would be able to listen to during a late night drive but also something you could turn on during a party and not worry about it killing the vibe. My latest track (and also my most downtempo track) is this remix of Icarus by Jeremy Zucker:

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

I grew up listening to classic rock so that has always been an influence on me. I first got into electronic music right before Zedd released his Clarity album. That album was a huge influence to me and still is as Zedd is a phenomenal musician and makes some amazing music. Also artists such as Kaskade, Skrillex and Swedish House Mafia all were big initial influences. As I started to get more serious about producing music my taste evolved into artists such as Madeon and Porter Robinson (especially with Porter's new Virtual Self EP) and even artists like Kygo and Seven Lions. I like to draw influences from everywhere and take the best elements of what these artists do, learn from them and put my own spin on them. I hope you can hear pieces of music I love when you listen to my own tracks!

What´s new right now?

I just released a remix of Icarus by Jeremy Zucker on January 12th which you can find on my SoundCloud! I also have a few originals in the works which are a bit of a progression in my sound as an artist. I'm currently debating on if I should release them as an EP or as singles but either way they should all be out sometime in 2018. I'm also working on getting some shows lined up for this year but I need your support! If you like my music or want to see me perform live then I would love if you follow me on any of my social media pages and feel free to interact with me as I love connecting with fans!

Are you a superfan of anyone? How did you become a superfan? Do you remember how you become a fan and what turned you into super fan? Have you ever thought about why you´re such a fan?

What was the biggest mistake you made when you started making music and what would be the number one tip you could give to a newcomer musician?

Just make music. I know people say it all the time but its so important to just finish something. I don't care if it sounds awful, see the whole track through and then move on because once you start doing that consistently you get way better. Also one tip to help with that is to drag a song you like into your DAW and copy the arrangement and song structure of it and learn that way. It makes a huge difference!

How do you personally discover new music?

Spotify has some cool playlists that I check into. I have a few, go to YouTube channels for finding stuff as well as my feed on my SoundCloud page. SoundCloud might be my favorite though because of all the bootlegs and things you can't find on Spotify.

Once you discovered new music, do you tell others about the new music/artist you discovered? If yes, how exactly?

“Yes! Either by word of mouth or reposting it on my SoundCloud. I also have a playlist on my Spotify Artist page for cool new music that I find!

What is your number one tip to improve your music production or songwriting skills?

One thing that has helped me a lot is to learn from other people's music. One way to do this is to take a song and rewrite the lyrics but keep the same flow of the vocals, just change the words. This gives you a creative boundary to lean on but also forces you to think of interesting ways to make words work in a song. You could also do this with melodies. Take chords from a song and put them in your DAW at the same bpm as the original, add some drums and then write a different melody. If you focus on learning one skill at a time you will progress much faster.

What is your best tip for those who struggle with finishing their tracks?

Use a reference track for when you get stuck. Find a track you like that has a similar feel to yours and drag it into your DAW. Then use that as a reference for how to progress past where you are stuck. Not sure what to do for a breakdown? Just listen to the finished track and do something similar!
