Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?
My name is Harry (aka Refract). I make electronic music and I also study Music Production at Leeds Beckett University in England. The sort of music I make is typically more melodic but over the past year or so I have started to become more influenced by hip-hop and have many work in progress projects that seem to take inspiration from that. I also have a passion for sound for film and I'm currently working on a portfolio of work for my degree in which I have taken clips from films like Alien and Blade Runner and removed all the sound from them and started to re-add my own.
How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?
My tastes have definitely changed over time. I've been a fan of rock music for as long as I can remember with some of my currently favourite bands being Muse, Biffy Clyro, Royal Blood and Linkin Park. I also have been a fan of electronic music for many years with the first big electronic artists I really got into being Pendulum, Deadmau5 and Skrillex, which then led me to go on to listen to more electronic genres and artists like Seven Lions and Koven who have inspired me a lot. Today I still enjoy this music but as previously mentioned I have started growing an appreciation for hip-hop with rappers such as Kendrick Lamar and Vince Staples. Listening to more hip-hop also made me go back a listen to other artists like Gorillaz who I have always enjoyed, but now I appreciate their hip-hop influences much more.
What´s new right now?
I have plenty of work in progress projects with many set to private on my soundcloud, waiting for when I feel they are ready to be released. Making time for music has been a bit of a struggle for me the past year or so due to having to study and work for my degree which is why I haven't released anything new for 10 months now, but I plan on releasing more music this year once I have hopefully graduated.
