Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?
My name is Rekkt.. I am an American electronic music artist, and I have made tracks in many different genres over the 20 years I've been producing music.
It started when I was 15.. one of my best friends let me borrow a computer program called Techno eJay.. it was a rudimentary drag and drop style DAW (digital audio workstation) similar to the Garageband of today, but significantly more simple. From the first time I ever played around with it, I was hooked. I had always wanted to create music, but never had the patience to learn a real life instrument, and at that point, didn't even realize you could make entire songs on a computer. I would spend hours playing around with that program, tweaking and working on songs. I eventually got to the point that I could not go any further with the program, or more so the program could no longer live up to my musical visions, so I searched for something else. I took me many years and many DAWs to find one that I enjoyed working with and that had seemingly endless possibilities, until I finally found Garageband, and then Logic Pro. I had finally found the program(s) that could help me create what I wanted to create, which at that point was dubstep.
About 2 years ago, I decided to start taking my music more seriously, and wanted to see if I could turn my passion into something more.. so I decided to submit some tracks to some record labels.. I submitted various tracks to a handful of labels and I waited…and waited… and waited. Then a little over a year ago, about the time I decided to give up hope, I got an email that changed my life. It was from a label out of England, Pink Dolphin Records, and they wanted to sign me! I was beyond ecstatic! It is not a huge label, run by husband and wife Rich and Sarah, but from the first time I spoke to Rich we had an immediate connection, and I knew they were the label for me. Since then I have released 1 full length album and 4 EPs (smaller albums with less tracks) with them, all different genres of electronic music.
My debut full length album, Rekktpocalypse, was my way of shouting "hey world, I'm here and I have something to say!" It is a 13 track assault of hardcore, in-your-face dubstep, wrapped in the concept of "The end of the music world as we know it." My follow up was a 4 track EP under the artist name The White Lotus called Like and Amphetamine. It was a 6 track Trap and EDM album with danceable grooves and pounding bass. I decided to release it under a different artist name because at that point I wanted to try different genres, but didn't want to give my audience a mixed message about the kind of music I made and who I was as an artist.. but after a lot of thought and self discovery, I decided I didn't want to confine myself into genres or boxes, and I would just let the music speak for itself. From that point on I decided I would release everything under the name REKKT, because as an artist, I create art, and whatever form that art takes musically is what I would present to the world, take it or leave it.
My 2nd EP was called Filthy.American.Dubstep, which was a bit more light-hearted on concept, but just as loud and brashy as Rekktpocalypse. It was a fun album, and kind of a response to comments I had seen on Twitter about how "Good dubstep only comes from the U.K." The next EP I released was called Space Face, and is a hybrid album of Future Bass, Dubstep, and even a little trance, and I feel like it is some of my best work to date. The quality of the songs are, to me, a level above everything else I've produced professionally thus far, and a level I am always striving to achieve. I followed that up with another EP called Down the Murderhole, and it is yet another departure in my ever evolving musical style. It features some Industrial music, DnB, and Electronic Metal, and was the stepping stone for my second full length album that I am currently working on.
How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?
My current influences go back to my roots as far as my own personal taste in music. I have always been a metal head from the first time I developed my own tastes in music, with other influences along the way in dubstep, future bass, and even some classical music depending on my mood and the track I am working on. I try to fuse and combine various genres to create my own unique style and sound.. my own unique voice in the music industry.. a voice that can hopefully be heard one day on a grand scale. That's the dream anyway, like it is for many, but even if that dream never comes to fruition, I am still happy creating my own art and doing something I love. Every fan I gain is a victory and a blessing, whether it's 10 or 10,000, I am so incredibly grateful for every single one.
What´s new right now?
Currently I am working on my next full length album.. it was tentatively going to be titled The Dubstep Monster, but my ever evolving style is currently steering me towards more of a Metal or Metalstep sound, so a new title may be in order depending on what the finished product sounds like. I am working with a few different artists in the electronic genres as well as the heavy metal genres to try and really create my ultimate vision for my next album.. I want to create something I never thought I could, something that fully embodies the unique sound I am trying to achieve no matter how long it takes. Similar to the examples below, but 1000 times better.
