Skinny Jean

Read the Skinny Jean Interview below and share it on social media.

Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

Hey y'all! My name is Skinny Jean (Skinny J for the closest ones). I'm a 22 year old French boy and I'm a beat maker/producer. I have been making beats in my bedroom for a little more than 3 years now, and I have slowly been learning about producing beats, mostly instrumental hip hop, with as a main influence, the New York artists from the 90s. My beats are usually pretty chilled-out, downtempo, jazzy and funky.

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

My influences, I'd say, are quite large. I was brought up on classic and psychedelic rock, before turning, around the age of 16 to more electronic music. I started listening more and more to the French beatmaking/scratching scene, with artists such as C2C or La Fine Equipe. At the same time, I was always drawn to the hip hop culture through street art, skating, clothes and so on… When I was 18, I started digging more and more into the old school hip hop and felt like this was the type of music I wanted to make. At the same time I was discovering all the "new school", instrumental, chopped up, hip hop. Huge influences for me around that time were Gramatik, Pretty Lights, GRiZ and all the like. Gangstarr, NaS, A Tribe Called Quest were the kind of old school artists that I considered as half-gods. So, with those influences in mind, I turned to beat making and decided I wanted to meet somewhere between those 2 classes of artists: staying instrumental while tuning it down to bring down more chilled and groovy beats. The recent instrumental hip hop scene has been a huge influence to me likewise, with artists such as Nightmares On Wax, Phoniks, ProleteR, Ours Samplus, GUTS and all those really underated French beatmakers.

What´s new right now?

So, my first and last EP (called Expressed Cortex) was released almost 2 years ago (yeah that's a pretty long time), and since then, I have been perfecting my art, and travelling around the world. After a year and a half in the making, my next EP (this one called Chamber Music) will be released within the next two weeks, and hopefully before Christmas! It's a collection of 9 beats that I have made in : the Netherlands, France, Spain, New Zealand and Fiji. We are, as I'm writing this, working on the final touches, the mixing and mastering, with a good friend of mine in Barcelona. I have tried to take inspiration from such vastly contrasting environments to fuel those beats, and to be honest, I am proud of this project. I think the different songs are quite different while keeping a coherent ensemble as a project. And, since Expressed Cortex, I can surely say that I have stepped up my game! So stay on the lookout for those Skinny Jean tunes!
