Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

From Warwick England; Soundchecksheps aka James Shepherd, has been a DJ for longer than he would like to admit. Originally from the West Country, starting off at house & free party's before launching Exeter house & breakbeat night Soundcheck. Soundcheck ran for 5 years at various venues across the city with guest's such as Switch, Inland Knights, James Holroyd, Bionic Bump Band, Sonny Wharton + more gracing the decks. He also held residencies at various locations in Exeter during the late 90's and early noughties and the 'Soundcheck Collective' were guests at many a Southwest night, such as 'Beatz & Bobz' alongside artists including Krafty Kuts, James Lavelle & Plump DJ's.
Although his roots lie is house music, his current eclectic sets feature funk, disco & soul rubbing shoulders with house classics and party anthems.

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

My first love has always been house music, I'm a big fan of the twisted tribal sounds of Danny Tenaglia, Steve Lawler etc. and been lucky to have wittnessed many incredible sets at clubs like Space, The End & Cream. Over the past few years I've been introduced to artists such as Dr. Packer, Late Nite Tuff Guy, The Reflex & Fingerman who are producing edits of classic tracks. Taking the core elements & updating for moderns dance floors in a creative way with incredible production skills. In many cases they're taking the original stems, re-arranging them adding drums, percussion & live instrumentation. Today's dancefloors more than ever before, seem to want to hear music they recognise, they want instant gratification and extended sets from DJ's taking the dancefloor on a journey are becoming more of a rarity. Many DJ's are playing shorter sets, the standard festival 1 hour set cramming in all of the latest biggest tracks. Maybe it's just that I'm getting older but I feel re-inspired with a new love for music and DJ'ing, wherever possible playing 4 – 5 hours sets of disco, funk and edits being able to play a broad range of music and the likes of Chic & Aretha Franklin to a whole new generation and the response has been great.

What´s new right now?

I've got a few gigs in the diary so far for the first part of 2018 locally and I'm also regularily uploading mixes on-line. The social media side these days is incredibly powerful. When we first started out, you'd record a mixtape to hand out to promoters and spend hours handing out flyers and putting up posters for night you were promoting. Everything is done on-line these days, Soundcloud & Mixcloud are an invaluable resource for getting exposure and feedback and Facebook advertising is extremely powerful, you can be so targeted. I've been blown away with the response to my latest 'Good Times' mix which has now had 42.5k listens from all over the world and weather recording mixes to upload on-line or playing out, it's all about playing music you love and sharing with others and hoping they get the same enjoyment out of it!
Please take a listen to my 'Good Times' mix, more coming soon both 'live' & 'in studio' sets.
