Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?
I'm Spencer Whatever, a producer/musician/performer based out of New Orleans. I make music by sampling dollar-bin vinyl records, collaging them and adding my own instrumentation such as drums, bass, guitar, keys and vocals.
Currently I'm releasing a song every Friday until Mardi Gras in February. You can check out the tracks here:
How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?
Absolutely my sound has changed. I've gone through three different monikers and three different sounds before getting to where I am today. When I first started experimenting with Ableton I was making mashups, then tried my hand at bass music for a while. I've always been a huge hip hop fan and some of my earliest influences were Dr. Dre, Public Enemy and A Tribe Called Quest. A few years ago I was turned on to a group called The Avalanches, and they have become my biggest influence to date. My sound has also been shaped by electro-soul artists Michal Menert and Exmag, and the dance music titans Daft Punk. Honorary shoutout to MF DOOM/Madvillain as well.
What´s new right now?
In addition to my "Mardi Gras Song-A-Week" series, I'm working on a full length LP that will hopefully be out by the beginning of this summer. I'm also building a new live performance that will allow me to build my songs from the ground up via live looping and instrumentation.
