STAYLEAVE

Read the STAYLEAVE Interview below and share it on social media.

Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

My name is Gus and I'm an Artist/DJ/Producer/Writer and Vocalist. I started the STAYLEAVE project about a year and a half ago when I was a senior in high school. I had already been producing for maybe 2 or 3 years, mainly focusing on that Big-Room/EDM-ish sound that was popular back then, but I wanted to switch it up and make my production a little bit more organic. I didn't even know I had a pretty decent voice until maybe 4 months after becoming STAYLEAVE when I decided to start recording my own vocals on top of my own productions. Since then I've had my music featured on Billboard, Spotify playlists, music blogs and I've also been supported by many people I look up to in the industry. Seems to be working out so far haha!

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

Ever since I was a kid I've always loved Indie/Punk Rock bands so I guess that was a huge influence to what I am making today. When I started getting into electronic music, my influences were Tiesto, Swedish House Mafia, Avicii, etc. Basically all those mainstage big room artists that were top 10 on DJ Mag, haha. As the time passed and I started producing under STAYLEAVE, my influences became artists who had a more organic sound, kinda like Flume, Jon Bellion, Porter Robinson, etc. Right now, I've heard a few people refer to my music as "Future Pop" or "Future Bass goes Emo" which I guess is kinda what I was going for, haha!

What´s new right now?

I just released a remix for Twenty One Pilots "Guns for Hands" which is on my Soundcloud. Im also planning to release a Hip Hop/Electronic EP in a few months which is gonna be absolutely fire, as well as a few releases on a collective I'm part of called SOLA and many many collaborations with a bunch of my friends and producers I look up to. I'm also starting a new Dubstep/Hybrid Trap side project which you will all be able to hear very soon! Be sure to check out my socials!

What was the biggest mistake you made when you started making music and what would be the number one tip you could give to a newcomer musician?

I think the biggest mistake I made when I started making music was never leaving my comfort zone and sticking to what I knew. It might work out for a while, but then it just kinda becomes work and everything starts sounding the same. Try some new styles, mess with some presets or even record something and just warp it and stretch and just mess with it. The cool thing about making music is you can't really be wrong, so just let the creativity flow!
