SWAY BOI

Read the SWAY BOI Interview below and share it on social media.

Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

I am a 24-year-old DJ & producer from Palatine, IL, currently living in Austin, TX. I have been making music for a little over 5 years. I DJed heavily throughout college, and began focusing more on producing once I graduated. My sonic arena encompasses hip-hop, high energy bass music, downtempo/lo-fi stuff, and all of the genre-bending sounds in-between.

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

My musical influences begin with the trap hip-hop scene from the early-mid 2000's. My best friend and I used to rap all the words to Three 6 Mafia songs such as "Baby Mama" and "Half On a Sack" when we were 12 years old. From there, my taste for rap grew exponentially through artists like Jay-Z, Kanye West, & Lil Wayne. I am still a hip-hop head today and always will be. Some of my favorite newer artists are Uzi Vert, Yung Simmie, wifisfuneral, and Trippie Redd. I think my two favorite albums from 2017 were Cyhi The Prynce's "No Dope on Sundays" and PnB Rock's "Catch These Vibes."

The 2nd hemisphere of my musical realm came about in 2012. After a few months of tactfully sprinkling dubstep & EDM into the music we'd share, another close friend of mine convinced me to attend the very first Spring Awakening Music Festival. There, I was ignited by the likes of Skrillex, Afrojack, Diplo, Flux Pavilion, and more. After this, I never looked back. My interests progressed through nearly all forms of house, dubstep, and trap. The electronic sounds I still love today can be characterized by Bassnectar, Excision, LOUDPVCK, the thousands of underground beatmakers on SoundCloud, and my all-time favorite, Mr. Carmack.

What´s new right now?

I just released a mix on my SoundCloud called SWAY RAPS 2017. For the last three years, I have posted a mix each January that recaps my favorite hip-hop tracks from the previous year. They all include big names, as well as artists you may have never heard of before. These are probably the most popular sounds I put out – my first one had 20,000 plays before being deleted for copyright infringement.

Looking into the future, I plan on posting rap mixes more frequently, with tracks from all eras and producer remixes. People really seem to like them so I want to make them more than once a year.

Along with that, I plan on continuing to aggressively hone my producing skills. I want to keep trying new things and eventually be able to fully create the sounds I hear in my head.
