Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?
Tess is a new singer-songwriter originally from Wicklow, Ireland, with Irish American roots. Tess spent the last few years working in London funding her music resulting in five self-released albums in the last two years, mostly recorded at Perry Vale Studios, South London. Musicians on the recordings include rock guitarist Barrie Cadogan (Little Barrie, Primal Scream), and Simon Little (Divine Comedy).
Tess is gifted as a natural songwriter, writing beautiful, highly original, melodic pop and rock songs, her sound heavily influenced by 60’s and 70’s pop, folk and rock.
Critical Review
Tess’ material has received critical acclaim, including from Ian Canty of Louder Than War, whose 2016 review of Favourite Director (Radio Edit) from her debut album Rules Of the Road described the track as a 'pristine pop pearl', ‘beautifully sung, truly beguiling, for lovers of C86- style indie pop, classic velvet underground shimmer and basically a good old fashioned tune attractively delivered’.
With full band, Tess embodies cheeky and energised attitude, Velvet Underground sonic shimmer and Joni Mitchell sensitivity. Tess also enjoys the intimacy of acoustic performances, for example playing delicate arpeggio for her modern classic Lizzie And The Morning (Soundcloud).
How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?
Key influences have been tuneful artists, for the 80's and 90's, as well as pop and rock from the 50's to the present day. My influences are getting broader as time goes on, including classical, hip hop, rap, jazz, folk, electronic.
What´s new right now?
I'm releasing an album 'Trans Siberian Tracks' chronicling my travel across Russia to Beijing via Mongolia. Basically two songs for every time zone..Songs like Siberia and Mongolian Melody are going down very well on Soundcloud, hope you enjoy!
