The Envlps

Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

We are The Envlps, a band based in Prague. Our name stands for “envelopes”, i.e. the containers for carrying a information. What we do is like a distant glance at how fast paced technology development affects our society and its cultural and moral norms. It is fascinating how quickly it changes our perception of what is considered normal. In our songs we try to capture subjective reality of an individual who needs to deal with this constant change. The cryptic stylization of our name — “Envlps” — symbolizes all this uncertainty and distortion that comes with it.

How would you describe your style and genre?

We call it darkwave synthpop but we’re not sure if it’s correct. It may be more just a reflection of our influences than an accurate description of the actual music we create. Musically we might be somewhere between Purity Ring and Soft Cell.

Who are your biggest influences and idols … and why? Do you have any idols? Are you a super fan of anyone? (Dead or alive, musician or non-musician)

It would be probably difficult to distill some specific artists from our music and claim them as our main influences. There’s too many of them, too much different music and styles we listen to. That combined with all that movies we watch, texts we read, people we meet, things we observe, things we process innerly. It is not like we can say: “Hey, lets do music like X and Y do!”. It doesn’t work for us.

It is more like being a filter subconsciously catching everything you go through and everything around you and then later, at one point, few of these things pop up. Like that metal song you liked as a teenager, movie Network you saw in your late twenties and those recent breaking news about terror attacks somewhere that were playing in background while you were drinking scotch before you went to sleep. All those seemingly unrelated memories, when put together, make a perfect sense and you have a song.

As for idolizing someone, it is a weird fetish. We don’t do that.

What´s new right now? What should our readers know about that is coming up from you?

We just finished recording of our upcoming single Catwalk. Same as with the previous EP Cloud, we did everything by ourselves. Now that all instruments and vocals are on tape we’re moving on to the production and mix phase. It’s planned to be released in September. We’d like to accompany it with a music video too. Hopefully we’ll be able to put it all together. We’re pretty excited with what we have so far and we’re looking forward to share it with our fans soon.

What has been your biggest challenge right now? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?
Being and independent artist is challenging overall. You deal with your regular life and work and allocating all your free time and resources to work on your breakthrough in music. That is a constant learning process. The longer you do it and the more you know, you see how little you actually still know.

How do you promote yourself? Do you have any specific promotion tips for other musicians?
Doing something well or great is not an advantage anymore. Being good all around is pretty much expected. We’ve become sort of numb towards all this.

Now it is more about finding connection between you and others. People starts to be more receptive to imperfection. Authenticity seems to be what wakes us now. So you put out some parts of you, your world, just to try to reach our and wait for someone to reach back. It is a little like throwing a message in a bottle to the sea. Have you ever found bottle like this. How great would it be?
