Thurst

Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

My name is Kory I play in a band with my sister Jessie under the name THURST. We recorded a demo tape in our then rehearsal space in 2015 entitled YSFC (You're So Fucking Cool) & subsequently self released our debut album Cut To The Chafe earlier this year. We've always strived to keep things down to earth and true to what we believe in. Such notions have certainly comprised our ability to gain traction in the crowded L.A. scene which typically benefits the privileged & pretentious. We've become more than willing to live with these results or lack there of.

How would you describe your style and genre?

We certainly started out as anything but a punk band (as our rough early demos would confirm lol) influenced more by artists like Portishead & Katatonia rather than the Richard Hells or The Modern Lovers of the world but at a certain point of trying to book shows & attending them in L.A. we continued to run into the self righteous "psych" pricks that ruled the L.A. scene in those days (13/14) it went as far as me approaching a very "prominent" figure in the scene while attending a show at Harvard & Stone with a demo CD of ours and being greeted with the biggest "fuck you, your band doesn't matter and never will" attitude ever, which looking back in all honesty was probably an accurate assessment of our band but at the time it PISSED ME THE FUCK OFF, we went back to our then rehearsal space later that night and wrote "YSFC" I think ever since then we've carried that feeling of angst in our music but I don't think we'll ever be confined to being just a punk band. But to answer the question yeah we're a punk band haha

Who are your biggest influences and idols … and why? Do you have any idols? Are you a super fan of anyone? (Dead or alive, musician or non-musician)

This isn't a specific person but the early 90's black metal scene in Norway had a huge influence on me & certainly shaped my view on music when I was younger. The idea of going against what's super trendy, not giving a fuck about bullshit things like production & exposure, just doing what feels right & not compromising for anyone. These qualities I very strongly believe in to this day. I certainly don't support any of these people's actions or beliefs in life outside of music, but I will always stand by VBE's Written In Waters.

What´s new right now? What should our readers know about that is coming up from you?

We finally have both of our albums available for streaming on all services! For most bands this would be old news haha but we just got both albums up & are really excited for people to listen to them at their our speed. You can find THURST on all screaming services & bandcamp as well. Future shows are up in the air for now, but future releases will be happening without a doubt.

What was the biggest mistake you made when you started making music and what would be the number one tip you could give to a newcomer musician?

Record your best few songs to the absolute best of your ability, don't get caught up in making an album or whatever bullshit. These days people just listen to songs not albums, the best you can make a single song the better off you'll be. With that being said I would never wanna record just a single or an "EP" cause it just kinda seems like billshit but I would still take my earlier advice haha
