I am Hunter Loewen, better known as Virusoid. I am 18yrs old and currently enrolled in Metalworks Institute of Sound and Production here in Ontario, Canada. I make anything from Hybrid Trap, Dubstep (Metalstep and Deathstep) and Riddim. I use Ableton and have been producing for around 5 years.

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

I am influenced by producers such as Datsik, Sullivan King, Svdden Death. I am also influenced by metal bands such as Arch Enemy, Megadeth, and Suicide Silence. I also have a track with Suicide Silence coming out in the next few months. My tastes have changed quite a bit, I used to only make dubstep and that was it, I started experimenting with Trap, Future Bass, Bass House and Jersey Bass. I release all my experimental music that doesn't fit into Virusoid's image under the name NDVR (Endeavour) alongside my Brother

What´s new right now?

I just released a Remix of Dillion Francis track "Say Less" with G-Eazy that has gained quite a bit of exposure getting 20K plays in under 12 hours. I have quite a few remixes and originals coming out in the next few months. follow me on twitter for updates on my music and add my snapchat to see what Im working on!

Are you a superfan of anyone? How did you become a superfan? Do you remember how you become a fan and what turned you into super fan? Have you ever thought about why you´re such a fan?

Im actually a huge fan of Jimi Hendrix, he was never the most technical musician but he played in a way that nobody could ever re-create and I think that's a very unique trait to him

What was the biggest mistake you made when you started making music and what would be the number one tip you could give to a newcomer musician?

the biggest mistake I made was as soon as I finished a track I would upload it to soundcloud without second thought, I just wanted to get stuff out there. Doing so did help get a little bit of exposure but it was with music that was mediocre and not professional at all. My best tip to new producers is to be patient and wait, don't rush trying to get famous and just work on your craft and eventually it will take off on its own.

How do you get gigs? Can you share any tips?

As an artist I want to be treated like a artist and not a DJ so I will send promoters my tracks instead of mixes so that they see I'm capable of doing more than just DJ'ing and will be able to bring in people who like my music

Do you have good promotion tips for other musicians?

I promote a lot on Twitter, I also have a few channels that I am in contact with to help my future releases. A tip is to just contact as many promotion channels as possible, from 100 followers to 100K just contact as many as you can and maybe you'll get onto the 100K channels

Do you have insights on how to grow your audience on soundcloud that you want to share with our audience?

PROMOTION! too many people just post their tracks on Soundcloud and wonder why they only get 20 plays, find channels on Soundcloud and Youtube that post similar music as you and ask them to post or re-post your music, even paid promotions are a great way to go as long as your not buying fakes

What has been your biggest challenge right now? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?

My biggest challenge has been getting gigs, there are people who want to see me play live but due to my age being under 19 its very difficult to get gigs in Canada

How do you personally discover new music?

I will find playlists on Spotify, Soundcloud that people have made and just shuffle through them. Being a DJ I always need new material to play out so I rely on those as well as my friends to send me new stuff they have heard. Facebook groups are also a great place to hear new music

Once you discovered new music, do you tell others about the new music/artist you discovered? If yes, how exactly?

What is your number one tip to improve your music production or songwriting skills?

Music Theory! I cannot stress enough how important theory is to artists, you may not think you will use it as your making EDM and not classical music but when you want to make music and have an idea in your head it will help get it out as you will have somewhere to start off

What is your best tip for those who struggle with finishing their tracks?

No distractions, when I go to write a track I get rid of my phone and disconnect my computer from the internet so that I will be focused. Also its get as much done in a small time as possible even if it sounds like shit to get the track done, then you can perfect it later and you won't forget where the track is going

We meet again in one year. What has changed?

I have a set-list of releases that I hope will do well, I am currently working on releasing under NSD: Black Label which would boost my exposure a lot. But I have no idea what will happen in the future so I'm just excited to see what happens
