Fna Muller – Berlin Techno Producer & Designer

fnaStraight from our hometown Berlin comes Fna Muller – Berlin Techno Producer with a Design Background. Check out this short interview on punk roots, reason 1.0, sharing an office with the soundcloud founders and a techno genre journey.
Q:Who are you?
My Name is Fna Muller.
Q: The Beginnings – When did you start making electronic music?
i exchanged my e-guitar for rebirth 1.0. after playing in punkbands for several years i was looking for something different. something that could be realized by myself. the freedom of fooling around with an 808, a 909 and two 303s was simply incredible at that time with that budget and a true eyeopener for in what can be achieved in your bedroom studio.
Q: What or who inspired you?
concerning electronic music i was infected by Detroit techno and acid house. from there i took a journey throughout multiple genres and styles.throughout the years i learned that every style holds some interesting aspects that can help you to improve your own interpretation of music. that said, just stay curious and you will stumble over inspiration.
Q: How would you describe your style?
deep, moody, haunted, hypnotic
Q: How was your grasp of the audio engineering & production at this time? How did you learn producing? Is it all self taught, from the internet and tutorials or mentors and teachers?
when i started i was lucky to met some guys that were quite experienced in musical productions. they shared their knowledge with me . so right from the beginning i learned that the “sound” is equivalent important than the arrangement or the track idea itself.nowadays i really appreciate all the helpful tips shared on the net by so many talented producers.
Q: Tell us about your setup. Are you using mostly software or hardware these days?
ableton is the centre of my productions. to generate source material i use nearly equaly hard- and software.
Q: What are your five favorite instrument and effect plugins?
– jomox mbase
– waldorf pulse
– ni maschine
– autofilter (ableton)
– operator (ableton)
Q: Who are the artists who have influenced you the most right now?
carl craig, kerry chandler, theo parrish, juan aitken, monolake, boards of canada, dabrye
trickski, martin buttrich
Q: What is your typical work schedule like?
1. trying to do stuff for 30minbreak: – if nothing works i quit and do something different. if something works out well i proceed to 2.2. if i got a result after 30min i try to lay it out in versions for another hour then leave itbreak – save the stuff with a proper name3. i work on finishing open tracks

break – if i am in the mood i go back to 1. if not i quit and do something different

Q: How do you promote your music? Are there any music promotion services you can recommend?
i used to share the office space with erik and alex back when they started supernice guys!
which is very useful in terms of album related stuff.
Q: How do you distribute your music? Are there any digital distribution services that worked for you which you can recommend to our readers?
nothing i feel happy with so far.
Q: Let´s talk about Djing and live gigs. Do you remember your first gigs? How were your first experiences with finding and playing gigs.
i just simply asked the owner of bars and clubs if there is any chance to play in their location. i did’t mind if i got payed or if the club was hyped or something. i just wanted to hear my own productions on a real pa. luckily some of them said yes.
Q: Was it complicated finding a booking agency or clubs to play at and how were the first gigs received? What´s it like on tour for you?
i don’t have a booker but nevertheless you get to know people over time. my booking strategy is word-of-mouth and friends.
Q: If you could only take one piece of gear on the road with you besides your laptop, what would it be?
– jomox mbase – that kick is huge!.
Q: What is your favorite animal?
i like dogs.
Q: What would your personal dream life look like?
i am pretty close to that. i have a beautiful wife, a lovely son, i do what i love, i travel and i got some money to spend – what else can you ask for?
Q: And what would be your worst nightmare scenario in life?
to be someone else.
In a parallel universe Q: If you weren’t a musician, what would you be and why?
i would love to be a big bird and fly around the globe.
The Future Q: When we interview you in one year, where do you see yourself?
i hope it will be a good year. no dramatic changes i guess.
