Blue Canarinho

Read the Blue Canarinho Interview below and share it on social media.

Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

My name is Blue Canarinho, i am currently, amongst other things, a DJ, Radio Host and Music Producer.

For radio i am one half of Brown X Blue which is a show every Sunday morning 10AM-12PM live on Reprezent Radio 107.3FM with my co host Melle Brown. Specialising in New age smoothness we bring underground talent from around the world and present them to thousands of listeners around London every week.

As for DJing i play solo as well as part of Brown X Blue live sets. For my own performances i bring everything from old school hip hop to garage and grime however for the majority of sets i play a mixture of grime and bail funk, merging the two genres and any kind of new spin i can in between.

For my productions it is not too dissimilar to my DJing style, mostly 130-140BPM, mixing Grime drums, R & B chords and Brazilian Baile Funk percussion's. I am currently working with some artists from London, trying them on tracks they may not have attempted before and mixing styles from around the world to come up with something new.

An quick example is a track i posted a few days ago with London based singer Delicia

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

Over the years my influences have always been kind of varied, ranging from old school hip hop when i was a young kid to getting into reggaeton and grime when in my early teens. Like most people i go through phases of what I’m feeling and its generally dictated by my emotions at the time.

I love uptempo feel good music in the summer because you have no cares in the world and just want to enjoy life, if a soundtrack goes well with that you want to keep that feeling. With the winters in England being so cold music is very important to me, the right track in your headphones while your on a crowded tube can save your day and make everything feel okay, music is powerful and its moments like that, that really influence me to make music.

What´s new right now?

Right now i am currently working in various studios around london as well as even sometimes in bed. Got a session in Nando’s studio that they set up in London next week and the week after, been doing some bits with Defining sessions in Shoreditch. Basically working with artists that you might not have thought i would work with a while a go.

I am currently mixing down a lo fi jazz kind of EP with a singer a from the Bahamas called Chelsea Blues, as well as at the same time working on various 140BPM tracks with some grime rappers and been spending some studio time with Nick Brewer who happens to be a rapper that i have mad respect for so its cool.

In terms of performances, the end of last year was kind of cool for us (Brown X Blue) we closed the Gorrillaz world tour in the 02 arena as well as performing around Shoreditch and Camden and we will be playing at the Roundhouse on the main stage next week for Little Simz Wonderland festival. After that we will be doing a performance in the Museum of London on the 17th of March and I’m pretty sure I’m headlining a show the day before that in shoreditch come to think about it but i haven’t seen the flyer yet so who knows, think its free too so come down if you want.

How do you personally discover new music?

I used to spend a lot of time on Bandcamp but I'm edging more towards Soundcloud these days, I feel like Bandcamp only really let you see the stuff that's already doing kind of well by there choice where as with Souncloud, this same thing kind of happens as you get recommended songs that are already on thousands of listens, but you can find more undiscovered talent on the site if your willing to look hard enough.

What is your number one tip to improve your music production or songwriting skills?

Listen to various styles of music, old new, whatever, or if you cant be bothered doing that just adapt the way you listen to the music you like, figure out the drum patterns, how often the track changes all of that kind of stuff, its basic but it helps and you can put it into your own music!
