Read the Boi King Koi Interview below and share it on social media.
Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?
I'm Boi King Koi based out of Brisbane, Australia. I make House music and I'm signed to Royalty Records. I have been DJing for 10 years and Producing Electronic Dance music for about 5 years. Before my journey into dance music I was classically trained on Trumpet (10 years) and Vocals (11 year). Between these two times in my life I also learnt to play Guitar, Piano and Beatbox. I was actually pretty good at Beatboxing back in the day and even battled the Australian Champ Mr. Bojangles in a local show. hahaha. Not many people these days actually know that about me. I keep that low key.
Currently I'm working on developing a sound that is unique to me and draws influences from many different genres all wrapped in a "house" framework. This is evident in my first track "I'm Working" featuring WongTune$ which incorporates melodic breakdowns, house drops, a trap switch up, 1 bar of breakbeat and a Hip hop vocal feature by Wong. I am focussing in on more House oriented music now and dream of being signed to Dirtybird Records.
How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?
As I mentioned above, I have many influences over my years spanning from Classic Symphonies, Jazz, Blues, Breakbeat, Hip Hop, House, Electro, To be honest there isn't many genres I don't like if the time and situation is right.
When I first started DJing I was into the classics of the time like Deadmau5 (his progressive stuff mainly), Daft Punk, Justice, A-trak, Bloody Beetroots and all those electro artists from the 2008 era. From there I really got into Breakbeat and got to play along side my idols such as Marten Horger, Krafty Kuts, Stanton Warriors, A Skillz and the Nextmen. I was lucky enough to work with some of them enough to now call them friends and we catch up whenever they are in my city.
These days House is my Jam and I am totally obsessed with everything Dirtbird. I can't get enough of Billy Kenny and Fisher right now and as always the legends like Caude Vonstroke, Justin Martin, Shiba San and all the other Dirtybird regulars.
What´s new right now?
I'm trying to make "different" music, cause normal is boring. I don't want to sound like everyone else and I feel like i'm starting to get there with my music. Everyone keeps telling me my music is different and I hope thats a good thing. So I have a few tunes almost ready for release in the coming weeks and months.
Right now I have a self release coming out on February 14th (I totally forgot this was valentines day when I booked in the release. haha) called "Our House" which features the classic speech by Chuck Roberts from "My House" which was released in 1987. I've always loved this vocal and wanted to put my spin on it. It's Vibey, electroey and has a heap of different feels throughout.
I am working on a tune that has a "Retro Funk" vibe to it and have a few other Dirtybird inspired groovey tech house tracks coming together nicely too.
Make sure you check out my soundcloud on valentines day for some Boy King Koi Love!
