Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

My name is Chris, I go by the producer name Bonus Points. I live outside of St Louis, Missouri and have been my whole life. Started producing music about 6 years ago now and have been making funky sampled based music of all styles for about 4 of those. Bonus Points started as a fun hobby I did in college as I worked towards getting my bachelors degree in Graphic Design at Missouri State, making songs here and there when I had time and not putting too much thought into the future of it. That was until this past year and a half when it really took off and is now basically my second job along with being a designer.

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

So I've had a lot of influences that kind of help mold my sound. When first getting into making beats I was heavily inspired by Nujabes and old adult swim bumps, those are basically what got me into it in the first place. So in the beginning I wanted to make that dreamy loop style beats that give you a certain emotion when listening to it. As I grew I wanted to make something more than just your standard beats so my influences ranged from funky dance guys to heavy bass bump stuff.

My taste in music is always changing, which I think is good because it keeps me on my toes when I sit down to make a song. Might release a boom bap beat song one day and then the next is a 120 bpm dance and trap song combined, always something new and fun.

What´s new right now?

So got lots of new stuff coming out soon! One big thing that just finished was I ran a crowdfunded campaign for my EP "Lost in The Tropics" to be put on vinyl which was a success, so thats pretty cool. As for new music I've got a single coming out this summer on Sundae Sauuce's funk compilation which is going to be dope. Also I'm working on a couple small EP collabs, one with iamalex that's going to be super funky and upbeat and then another one with NY rapper named Juicebox. That one is going to be cool because it's the first time I've worked with vocals on tracks.

As far as live gigs go, I did one last summer which was so nerve wrecking yet exciting when all said and done, so right now I'm trying to work on my dj skills to get out there and make that the next step of my music.

What was the biggest mistake you made when you started making music and what would be the number one tip you could give to a newcomer musician?

My biggest mistake was trying to be something I wasn't. When I started producing I wanted to make dubstep and other heavy bass songs to be cool and have my stuff played at festivals, yet I listened to other chill and melody type songs. This showed in production because I hated everything I made and basically caused me to quit producing music until I started making chillhop style stuff.

My tip would be to always do what your'e passionate about regardless of popular opinion because someone out there will like it and you'll enjoy it more.

What has been your biggest challenge right now? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?

I'd say my biggest challenge right now is overcoming the fear of playing live, i'm a pretty quiet guy so to get on stage and dj live is quite a feat for me.
