Read the cyn. Interview below and share it on social media.
Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?
Hello, I'm cyn. "cyn." is short for cynical, I chose this name because I've been told that I'm very cynical by multiple people and I thought it just sounded cool. But, everybody calls me Jacob. I'm twenty years old, I was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska. I'm currently still living in Anchorage, in a tiny studio apart with my fiance. Anyways, I make "EDM". I started making music a little over two years ago, mostly just simple drum and bass or chill hip hop beats to relax to. Even though I made hip hop beats at first, I mostly listened to electronic music and dubstep. I wanted to get into making EDM but I had little to no knowledge of music production, so I had no idea how to do it. Eventually I got FL studio 11 and after watching endless YouTube tutorial videos, I started to make remixes of songs that I liked. Now, I like to refer to myself as an "Electronic Music Producer".
How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?
I really wouldn't say that other artists have influenced my music, more like inspired me to make music. Hearing a song I've never heard before is a new experience for me, so I listen to every little thing. Every kick, every synth, every melody. It could just be a sound that I have never heard before and that is so cool to me that you can make your own sounds and instruments that nobody else has ever heard, they're completely yours and nobody else can claim them. People that have made big impressions on me in music are Madeon, Flume, Dillon Francis, Getter, Borgore, Kygo, Madnap, Poly Pines, and so many more I can't even count them all. But, when I first got into electronic music I really only listened to "festival" kind of songs. Like "Animals" by Martin Garrix and "Wake Me Up" by Avicii. I used to hate dubstep and any type of music that was a little bit weird or not the typical EDM song. But now that is really all I listen to.
What´s new right now?
As of right now, I've been focusing on becoming a better music producer. Unfortunately I don't have any upcoming releases right now, or any live shows. I've never even done a live show before, not because I don't want to. I just have stage a little bit of stage freight. You can expect more music from me later this year, sometime this summer.

What was the biggest mistake you made when you started making music and what would be the number one tip you could give to a newcomer musician?
I have two, I drove myself crazy with trying to make every song or beat perfect. I still do this sometime but I did it a lot more when I first started. It's better to take a step back and tell yourself that your music is probably going to be kind of bad when you first start, but that's ok, you just started and have all the time in the world to improve. The second make I made was releasing my first few songs I made immediately. Listening to my old music makes me cringe and ask myself "Why did I think this was ok for me to put this song out?" If you're just starting out, I think you should sit on your first few songs for a while and give yourself more time to grow into a better artist.

What is your best tip for those who struggle with finishing their tracks?
When I am having trouble finishing a song, I start another one or give myself some time away from the song and come back to it with fresh ideas, ready to finish the song.

We meet again in one year. What has changed?
If I were to do another interview in twelve months, I would like to be able to say that I have a bigger fan base now and that I have played a few shows. That is all I would like to accomplish as of right now.
