Hi All! I'm Matthew ((DJ ROCKSTAR)) an open format DJ from Chicago but resides in San Diego CA. I consider myself an artist because I do so many different things in music, acting, cooking and martial arts. I have been a DJ for 20 yrs, have been touring nationally and internationally for 10+ yrs. I was the official DJ for the "Coors Light Maxim Search Party Tour". I was voted DJ of the year by MTV some years back. Coors Light wanted a high energy, fun open format DJ for their tour with Maxim magazine. That's my forte as a live DJ/MC I'm really fun, play all types of music and really play to my crowd no matter what the event. For those of you that are too cool to take requests you may want to reconsider. This is partly how I have been able to stick around for so long. I play all types of events public and private on a weekly basis. As a business a man or woman (DJ) you are only as good as your clientele. A big ego will always work against you. OK flashback, In the early 2000's I was on the forefront of mixtapes and mashups. I was born with CHD basically that means I am a heart patient. One & 300 Million. Yah! Not really.. Anyway, I was never good at sports so I just focused on music, acting, cooking and martial arts. I started producing as a kid then it just kept evolving from there. I was a student of Phil Spector or the "Wall of Sound". Spending lots of time in the studio playing and learning to tweak sound was how I really started to figure things out. Way before the laptop area became popular. DJs think hey I'll go to school and learn how to use this DAW then I'll be good a producer. Nope! I have many acquaintances like that and their music is so so at best. You see nothing is further from the truth. Music does not come from a program it comes from you first then you use the program as the vehicle. Nowadays, I'm in a couple bands and spend most of my time recording, singing and playing guitar. I also spend time mentoring kids and adults to help hone their skills in the studio and live performances. If you have questions hit me up I'm always happy to help cool hungry aspiring artists. How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?
Early influences growing up in Chicago suburbs were: The Beatles, Elvis, Van Halen, Black Sabbath, etc… Rock, Hard Rock, Metal, Oldies, Disco. Then I heard House music on B96 in the early 80's and that changed everything for me. I didn't know it until I became a DJ in my early 20's. So I stated merging Rock and Dance together hence DJ ROCKSTAR. Plus I thought it was a catchy name. =)
What´s new right now?
I keep busy doing a few different things like performing public and private events. I recently released a new original "Funk Beat" now on iTunes, Spotify etc. Currently in the studio working on a couple remakes that will be released soon. I produce fun mixes for Fitradio once a month. I'm also in a couple bands playing shows and or doing open mics. On top of all that I love working on martial arts as well as cooking and my stand up comedy act. Please see below for links to my original music and mixes.
