Hey Guys!

My Name is Felipe Vargas, professionally known as "FELVA". I am an Urban and Electronic DJ/Music Producer based out of Miami, Florida. I haven't always been known as FELVA though. In fact, I recently went through a huge career change where I changed my name from "FVEGO BEATZ" to "FELVA". This was a really big move for me because prior to making the name change to FELVA , I had released dozens of songs, remixes, and grew a legitimate fan base for roughly 7 years under the name “FVEGO BEATZ”.

Let me give you a quick back story on how I got to this point. In my early teenage years I grew a passion for making beats, rapping, and playing the piano. Over time, I became obsessed with making beats and coming up with catchy melodies and lyrics. Naturally, the next step was for me to learn how to DJ. This is the point where “FVEGO BEATZ” officially became my DJ/Producer name. I was 21 and going to Manhattanville College in New York. Eventually this took me on an on going creative process that led me to where I am today.

Now at the age of 28, I have decided to drop the Name "FVEGO BEATZ" completely and continue to move forward with my music as "FELVA". This was not an easy decision for me to make but it was something that I came to terms with for several reasons.

The first and biggest reason why I decided on the name change was because of the Spanish Rap Artist "FUEGO" whose career has recently taken off by collaborating with artists like Dillon Francis. Mind you, FUEGO and FVEGO are spelled differently but pronounced the same. With Fuego's career on the rise, I didn't want to continue to put out music or content under a name that sounded just like mine and was already being used on such a major sale. I'm actually a huge Fuego fan and I hope to be able to work with him at some point so I really just wanted to be smart about moving forward with my music and avoid a potential awkward situation between him and I because as I stated, I really do enjoy Fuego’s music and hope to work soon!

After doing all this thinking and soul searching about my name change. I decided to officially change "FVEGO BEATZ" to "FELVA". I realized that as an artist, you should try to be as unique as possible. Not only by differentiating yourself from the way your music sounds but also from something as simple as your name and your branding.

“FELVA” is an abbreviation of my real name, Felipe Vargas. Its clean, simple, and rolls nicely off the tung, but most importantly, it is unique! It can be Trademarked! It can be protected! It is a name that I feel is worth investing my music, time, energy and resources into building and eventually making a household name in the music space.

I am writing about this because this is advice I wish someone would have given me back when I was younger and deciding what my artist name should. Actually, now that I think of it, Someone did try to give me this type of advice but I was so emotionally attached to the name”FVEGO BEATZ” That it literally went in one ear and out the other. This is a great example of when making career decisions you must think with your head instead of your heart sometimes.

In this day and age you must be strategic with how you brand yourself, make sure you are able to be easily find on Google and that there is no confusion between your Artist name and anything else that might exist out there that can potentially distract your audience from your brand. With that being said. I am a firm believer that things happen the way they happen for a reason. You must go through certain things in life to get to where you will eventually want to go. I couldn’t be happier with my name change and I am even more excited for all the awesome music and content that is yet to come under FELVA, just wait on it!

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

I grew up heavily influenced by Hip-Hop, Trap, Miami Bass, Danehall, Reaggaeton, and Dance/Electronic. However, I was born in Quito, Ecuador and and my father's side is also Colombian so I also really love Andean Music, Salsa, Vayenato, and Cumbia. Andean Music is pretty much farmer music from the Andes regions in South America. Lots of flutes, panpipes and accordions are used in this type of music. I think the tropical side to my music is a result of being influenced by the Andean culture and its sounds. The bass and more urban side to my music comes from me growing up in Miami and living in New York for a while.

My taste in music has definitely changed over time but that isn't to say that I do not still appreciate music that I liked back in the day, today. I think every record has its own vibe and being on the creative side of music you have to see each piece for what it is. Having this mentality allows me to be open to a huge catalog of music which makes my music better because I am always learning.

I like DJ's like Diplo and DJ Snake because I think they resemble me in the sense that they play all sorts of music in there sets and have a nice balance between EDM, Urban, and World music. If I had to pick guys that really influence my production and DJ style it would be them. I also really enjoy Trap producers like Mike Will, Metro Boomin, Rvssian, Hit Maka and Smash David. These guys are always pushing the norm in Hip Hop and it Trap music. I'm always studying these guys. Hearing there melodies and sounds. As a beat maker, I truly enjoy their production and hope to collaborate with them sometime as well.

My mood and vibe definitely change though. Like right now I absolutely love the Afro beat sound. Its such a worldly sound that is super percussive and works so well in almost anything if incorporated the right way.
