Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

My name is Jacqueline Palmer and my DJ name is jacki-e. I live in a small village in Northamptonshire in the UK. It's a very rural area, very quiet, with lots of small, quaint English villages, but it's good for concentrating on my own music and on my radio show as there are very few distractions.

I started to learn to DJ in 2014 and the radio show started in Feb 2015 when a friend who had just started her own radio station, which is Radio Flintshire, heard a mix I'd put up on my Soundcloud page. She was looking for someone to do an up to date electronic dance show so she asked if we would be interested. My partner and myself said yes we'd do it. The first show was put together in two weeks. We'd never done anything like it before. We had no equipment apart from our entry level DJ Controller, but somehow we managed it and since then we've never looked back.

The radio show is called A Darker Wave. It is put together in our home studio and streams worldwide every Saturday night on Radio Flintshire and House Nation Toronto, featuring the best in underground techno, tech house and deep house. Each show is 2 hours long. In the first hour we go into the mix with our featured EP of the week and the best of the new releases. We also promote up and coming DJ's and producers who are not widely known by playing their music and offering them the opportunity to do a guest mix, which is played in the second hour of the show. To us this is very important. Without new music, there is no development, no improvement and no advancement. New DJ's and producers are the lifeblood of our music, regardless of genre.

I also produce my own music and do remixes of other artists' tracks using Ableton Live.

We DJ together as A Darker Wave and we have played at events in Germany, Birmingham, the East Midlands, Brighton and Worthing.

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

I first got into music in the late 1960's with rock bands like Fleetwood Mac (the original incarnation of the band with Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood) Cream, The Easybeats, Love, The Velvet Underground and The Zombies. I was completely enraptured by the choppy guitar riffs, the driving percussion, the blues influenced rhythms and the sheer excitement of it all. Nico, who sang with the Velvet Underground, was my first female musical role model. She seemed to be so strong and so confident of herself and her sexuality and she looked and sounded so cool.
Other early influences are American bands like the Byrds, the Grateful Dead, Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. And of course Joni Mitchell who is probably my favourite artist of all time. Her voice, the way she constructs her melodies, her phrasing are just so lyrical and beautiful.
Apart from Led Zeppelin and Roxy Music, the music scene in the early 70's went a little bit stale, but in 1975 I saw the first UK tour by Dr Feelgood and they re-introduced an excitement to the scene that had been sorely lacking.. Punk came along in 1976-77 and I was into that in a big way. I loved the Sex Pistols, the Clash and the Jam, the Damned and also the Ramones, Television and the New York Dolls. Blondie were a huge influence. Deborah Harry was my next female role model after Nico. Due to punk, music was suddenly full of strong female role models, with bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees, Polly Styrene of X-ray Spex, the Raincoats, the Slits and Penetration.

Techno, deep house, jungle, dnb and the ethos of the acid house raves and festivals of the early 90's are, of course, a huge influence on what I do now. In my own music, the music I play when I DJ and the music I play in the radio show, you can hear the underlying stories which have influenced me in my preference for the darker edge of electronic dance music.

We take our inspiration for our radio show from Colin Faver, who was a pioneer of the dance music scene in the UK. He was one of the few people to recognise the amazing music being made in Detroit and Chicago in the late 80's and early 90's – the birth of modern house and techno music – and he was one of the first people to play these records in the UK on his radio shows on Kiss FM.

He invited up and coming DJ's and producers to send in their mixes and he would play them on his show. Many of today's well known names got their first break on Colin's radio show. For example Backlash by Cybersonik, a track from 1991 that still sounds as great today as it did when it was first released. One of the members of Cybersonik was Canadian Ritchie Hawtin, at the time unknown in the UK or Europe. Colin gave Cybersonik their very first radio play outside Canada when he played Backlash on his show.

A Darker Wave embodies the spirit of what Colin Faver was doing in the earliest days of the UK's modern dance music scene. We are not trying to say we do it as well as he did. Far from it. But it is his legacy that inspires what we try to do with A Darker Wave.

For me, it is the mavericks and outsiders who make the most interesting music. From Peter Green and Arthur Lee in the 60's to David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Joe Strummer and John Lydon in the 70's, and later on Mark E Smith, Kurt Cobain, Radiohead, Aphex Twin and many more. For me, music should have the lyricism of Joni Mitchell, the excitement of punk, the thoughtfulness of Arthur Lee, the showmanship of Iggy Pop, the romanticism of Roxy Music, the craft of Radiohead and the left field appeal of Aphex Twin.

Artists that influence me today are Charlotte de Witte, Amelie Lens, Rebekah, Dasha Rush, Anna, Adam Beyer, Ramiro Lopez, Spectrasoul and Total Science. I love music that is stripped back, that has lots of space in it, that uses vocals and music to deliver a message or an emotion, that makes you want to dance, that makes you believe in it, that uses chord progressions, melodies or a beat that makes your hair stand on end and your spine tingle, that is exciting and challenging and that makes you think.

What´s new right now?

I've just released my own re-edit of an original track I made some time ago. It's called 'Nightmare.'

Recently I completed two remixes which I did for competitions, one of Reinier Zonneveld's 'Undertone' and 'Fanfare' by Emerson, Digweed & Muir.

Another original track of mine will be getting a release later this year on a compilation LP from a well known techno label and I'm currently working on a number of new original tracks and remixes.

And of course there's a new show of A Darker Wave uploaded to our Soundcloud and Mixcloud pages every week.
