Jessika Dawn

Read the Jessika Dawn Interview below and share it on social media.

Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

I am Jessika Dawn, a singer/songwriter in the Electronic Dance Music Community. I reside in Vancouver, Canada and best known for my Trance releases such as, "Fall For You" with Suspect 44 and Soar, released on Armada Captivating; and "Rainfall" with Makaseo, released on Emergent Cities. If you would like to check out these songs and my discography you can do so easily by following the social links at the end of the interview.

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

My influences have definitely changed over the years. They've also had a hand in why I can't seem to fit into any one box. I grew up listening to Pop, RnB, and Hip-Hop, and Rap. In the early 2000's is when I discovered Electronic Music but it wasn't until I found Trance that I decided to take singing seriously. I wanted to be one of those, "angel voices". As I smothered myself in Progressive House and Trance I seemed to gain some traction but my phase changed. Instead of the lighter sounds of Trance, I started to like the deeper, dirtier dance music and now am inspired by Liquid Drum n Bass (Trap, and Rap -again) and venturing in the bass world. I still like Trance, most of my collaboration opportunities are with Trance producers but it will be interesting to see how the bass world treats me.

What´s new right now?

Right now I am working on a few tunes to try to impress some of the people I'd love to work with; I hope to grow within my craft this year both in songwriting and vocal abilities. While I'm hard at work on these demo's I do have some releases coming out in the next few months. I'm just on the verge of being able to speak more about them so I do encourage you to follow my socials to get a sneak peek; know when the release dates are. Trance lovers will be happy!!

Are you a superfan of anyone? How did you become a superfan? Do you remember how you become a fan and what turned you into super fan? Have you ever thought about why you´re such a fan?

Haha, yes -those who know me already know the answer before I say it. I adore tyDi (Dj and Producer) and the former Moonbeam (a duo production team). I think, from what I've been shown, they're fantastic people with a huge creative drive and thirsty to do something, "Different" and not stick within a box. Moonbeam were in their own category, for they had this signature 'Moonbeam' sound that just captivated me. Add in Avis Vox's vocals (which is often) and you're just taken down this path of experimentation and originality. Their stuff was different and interesting and I loved that.

With tyDi it's a bit of the same thing, not to mention that he's a looker! He's not stuck in a box -in fact, he's making circles around it and producing what he wants to, challenging himself and his career. I love his current direction of trying to infuse the live instruments with electronic music and excited for what he's currently orchestrating now – he's a good one to keep watch on.

My wildest dreams would come true if I worked with either of these fellas.

What was the biggest mistake you made when you started making music and what would be the number one tip you could give to a newcomer musician?

If you're serious about being in the music business you have to be professional and act accordingly with legalities, etc. So, always be sure to have a written conversation (or a drafted agreement) surrounding your royalties, etc, so when it comes time to sign it (however how long that might be unless stipulated) there will be no arguments over the arrangments and no one will be in the dark on exactly how things are going to go down. Things can get ugly if there is a misunderstanding.

No one likes to talk about these things because we'd all do it for free and it's a buzz kill but let's face it we all want to make music for a living and how can we do that if we don't take care of our business.

How do you personally discover new music?

I usually find new music through Spotify and Soundcloud suggestion playlists and hashtags.

Once you discovered new music, do you tell others about the new music/artist you discovered? If yes, how exactly?

“I definitely do let other's know. I have a monthly mix available on iTunes called, 'Human Nature'. You should check it out if you love chill music. It's very eclectic starting off ambient to pull you in and gets faster crossing a wide spectrum of genres and artists. These are the types of music you make you relax, sleep, lounge, study, pamper yourself with, make love to… all that. You can subscribe on iTunes and also stream on Soundcloud and Mixcloud.

What is your number one tip to improve your music production or songwriting skills?

I think that with any part of music creation trying to create things from different angles so it changes your perspective a bit. Maybe this would be achieved by listening to a lot of different types of music! I think that because I really enjoy sounds outside my own culture, my own productions and sound choices are inspired by this. I then hear different elements to maybe add to the song; A producer would be able to then hear a lot more sounds within his/her mind to create something unique (instead of just listening to the latest formula) I would imagine because it certainly does help me like that.

What is your best tip for those who struggle with finishing their tracks?

If the tweaking and challenge of thinking of all the layers don't inspire you or motivate you then that song is not meant to be. I've beat myself up for months unable to finish a song but I couldn't conjure up any excitement over it or what I was coming up with, I let it go and cancelled the project. I find that the best work comes out of nowhere under this spark of motivation where you're obsessed with it until it's done. If you're not feeling that type of passion about the tracks you write ask yourself why. If not finishing your tracks is a habit you need to ask yourself if you have the patience to produce or write songs in the first place; I know I get bored when producing -this is why I admire their skills/talent. I like to switch it up and change genres and singing styles until I feel inspired by the one I'm stuck on again.
